I have a 19 month old son and just gave birth three weeks ago to a little girl. My son's behavior has gotten to be a problem. He isn't listening and throws things at me. He also is getting into things he know he shouldn't and smiles when I say no. He seems to listen to my husband only, but that's only once in a while. What do I do? Is this normal for a jealous child?

it's normal. he just wants attention from you and he will get ANY attention that he can. spend more time with him and praise him when he behaves good.

He is jealous now that he does not any longer have your complete attention all to himself. You have to spend some time with just him maybe twice a week, where the 2 of you, or he and his dad, do something special, leaving the baby at home with a sitter if possible.
This way he will know he is still special, and will look foreward to going out somewhere with you only. Make plans with him early in the week, and bring it up when necessary to remind him.

It is very normal. The kid's jealous of the extra attention your new child is getting. Make sure to include your son in things having to do with the baby. He needs to know that this new life is his brother/sister and he needs to learn ways he can show love to him/her. When he throws things at you, make it clear that such behavior isn't OK - but don't yell at him. Ask him why he wants to hurt his mommy who loves him so much. You can appeal to a kid's heart and mind. Kids are sharper than we think they are.
