I tend to clench my teeth without even thinking about it, I think I also do it in my sleep because when I wake up my teeth and jaw hurts. My mom said to try to relax my jaw and it works sometimes, but not always. What can I do to avoid this problem?

I used to do the same thing for many years and so did my daughter. This is most defininitely a stress related problem. Book yourself into a relaxation class. I did yoga for 3 mths and I'm under complete control now. I do the breathing exercises I was taught before I drop off to sleep at night and 'BINGO', no more aching jaws in the morning. It does take a little bit of practice, though. You cannot teach yourself these techniques, you need a teacher to guide you and help you to focus. In the first instance you might like to try Dr Scheusler's tissue salts, Mag Phos (by Martin & Pleasance, an English brand, you can check their web site). All natural, good stuff, good for headaches too. GOOD LUCK!

Some people say that you clench or grind your teeth at night due to pent up anger. My ex used to do it and it was very annoying (and bad for your teeth and jaws). Try getting a mouth guard. Another trick that works for some people is to try to keep your jaw relaxed and your front teeth apart (not clenched together) during the day and as you go to sleep

Have your dentist make you a bite-guard. Some people tend to be clenchers/grinders, and over time it can result in significant damage to the teeth as well as cause TMJ(jaw joint) pain.A bite guard is an easy, noninvasive way to protect your dentition and will hopefully carry you through this period of clenching.

talk to your dentist about getting a night guard. IF you grind your teeth too much you can cause jaw tendon damage and wear down your teeth

have your mom make an appointment with a dentist before you damage your teeth.

get a mouth guard at the store or one from your dentist. you can wear it at night or even in the day if you catch yourself doing it.

it's usually stress related and it's hard to stop yourself from doing it.

i chew lots of gum.
