I was just curious. Im in Indiana and we've had plenty of snow this year already. Are my dogs safe from fleas in the winter or are they present all year round? Is it neccasarry to keep them on flea medication during the winter season?

Um, I never said the fleas were on the dogs or in the house now did I sassy pants. I was wondering if they died off in winter and if they should stay on the flea meds all year round! No need to be rude.

The fleas won't be an issue outside during the winter, but that doesn't mean they can't survive Indoors. If you've never had an infestation before, then you are fine. If so, then you would need to eliminate the eggs that are indoors, in your carpet, linens, furniture, or bedding. For me, I don't put the flea meds on my dog during the winter, but I always give him the Heart Guard since mosquitos are still prevalent during the winter here in CA. But your dog can also catch fleas from other infected dogs or infested environments.

Fleas are not seasonal as once believed, thanks to the presence of central heating. They will happily over winter in your home. It's a good idea to treat during the winter months, if not monthly then at least every 3 months. Remember their eggs can lie dormant for ages - if there are any in your home, they will be encouraged to hatch out when you turn your central heating on!

Fleas hate cold, but there are fleas inside your house as well. As long as your house is not free of fleas you'll have to keep on treating your dogs.

No they hibernate. If it gets cold enough where you live, they will stay in hibernation, until the weather's warmer.
