I have a 2002 dodge 1500 automatic and from time to time after I park and turn the engine off and restart later the gear shift will not move. I turn the steering wheel, depress the brake pedal, and even turn off engine and try to put in neutral. After a while of messing with it, it will eventually go into reverse or drive.

Do you park on an incline and not set the parking brake or put the truck in PARK before coming to a complete stop, if so this could jam the transmission in PARK. I can't remember how the park position works anymore, but I have seen them jam from the above mentioned actions.

there have been some problems with the interlock solenoid on those. the solenoid unlocks the cable when the brake is pushed. the solenoid will stick and not let the cable move. it is part of the shift cable.
