Vegemite is considered as much a part of Australia's heritage as kangaroos and the Holden cars. It is actually an Australian obsession that has become a unique and loved symbol of the Australian nation.
A Vegemite sandwich to an Australian kid is the equivalent of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to an American kid - but the taste is QUITE different!
Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. It is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives. It is very dark reddish-brown, almost black, in color, and one of the richest sources known of Vitamin B. It's thick like peanut butter, it's very salty, and it tastes like - well let's just say that it is an acquired taste!
Australian children are brought up on Vegemite from the time they're babies. It is said that Australians are known to travel all over the world with at least one small jar of Vegemite in their luggage, for fear that they will not be able to find it.
I put in all of this extra stuff as I found it fascinating to read about the lack of availability of Vegemite in America. Now there seems to be a problem with my mouse though the batteries seem to be alright and I can't hit the Preview button and am wondering if the FBI are worried about news of Vegemite leaking out to the masses??? Mmmmmmm. I am doing my best to get this unchecked answer out to you. Hang in there??? I am still blocked. What on earth is going on here. Mouse flashing but can't get an arrow going here??? Very worried about this development see I can type but can't transmit this answer. Conspiracy theory Mel Gibson or what????
These are some posts I found on the below ref site: Sorry for all of this writing and it seems it has been banned in the States because of Folate?????:
I was wondering why it was suddenly extra difficult getting a pot of Vegemite/Marmite in Chicago! There's not a huge difference between the two (I've had both, growing up). You will definitely find both in England. Stateside, we joke that the Britons don't know food, but it just turns out that it's just a lack of food issues (they have curry Pringles, hello!). In Chicago, you can get Marmite at Whole Foods for $5. Pricey, but there's no help for that, I suppose. Believe it or not, it's shelved with the bakery supplies!

THIS is why I can't find Vegemite anymore?!
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/st...
"The United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite... because Vegemite contains folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals."
That's just wacky.
Thanks for the info! Last time I went to Cost Plus it was gone, I was forced to buy the expensive Marmite! This is just crazy!

You're right Chris, wacky is the only word for it. Folate is...vitamin B-9, clearly a harmful substance! So harmful that it's been federally mandated to be added to be added to breads and cereals, as the article you linked points out. And why? to prevent neural tube defects in developing fetuses early in pregnancies. So...lord forbid anyone, pregnant or not, consume folate? Vegemite has been available in the US for decades. Whomever is responsible for this is beyond wacky.

Try to find a natural foods or international foods store. Look in the yellow pages for them, or do a Google search. They're the only types of places I have found anywhere in the US that sells Vegemite.

I've seen a similar product, called Marmite at an Asian-foods store, called the World Market (in my home town). There may very-well be a similar store in the Chicago area.
I tried Vegimite one time -- it's about the nastiest stuff I've ever had in my life. You really have to acquire a taste for it.

In the SF Bay area try Long's Drugs in Muir Station in Martinez. Southern CA - try Fresh and Easy in Hollywood on the Walk of Fame. You can also ask Albertson's to order it for you. They say they will order a product for customers.

We make it here in New Zealand.
I have heard it has an additive that is not allowed in US foods.
You may find it in the International section in the supermarket, if I am incorrect.
