my 8yr old foxy loves going to nannas house, every time we say the word nanna my foxy goes stupid, she runs around the house, crying with excitement and then waits at the door to get in the car, so what we started to do was spell out n.a.n.n.a, well it didnt take her long to realise that we were spelling out nanna, i think shes the smartest dog on the earth! does your dog know how to spell?

If anyone says "ready to go" around my dog, he does the same thing. So I started spelling it and I really think he's starting to catch on!!! Maybe the phonetics of both nanna and ready to go sound the same when spelled out? Either that or we both have crazy smart dogs :)

If you really believe that your dog knows how to spell then just try misspelling nannas - it is more likely that your dog is taking his cues from your demeanor and/or body language. Dogs are very good in reading their owners demeanor and often will respond and even anticipate re-occurring events.

Most dogs can learn to spell. Well not really but it looks good! They get used to the repetition the same way they got used to the word originally. It's not really what you say but the actions you make even the unconscious ones! I always say time to go, when going out but my dog knows when it means I'm going out and when it means WE are going out!

Awwww! I guess its just by association. She must just have realized that you always say those letters when you see Nana!
Our dog does this with certain people she LOVES - not figured out the spelling though! Your dog is awesome!

Yes! They both go bananas when they know they are going for their walks, we can't even open the drawer where we keep their leashes bc they know which one it is and what it sounds like when we open it! They also do the spelling thing with the word treat!

My old roomates dog "Tiva" could understood too. If anyone said "walk" or "park" she would run and get her leash and wait by the door. My roomate started to spell "park" and "walk" but she caught on in no time.

My dog does the same thing, but she knows the words "WALK" "RIDE" "FOOD" and knows when we spell them as well. She also knows that when we put on shoes or coats we are going to go outside. It so funny.

hey dogs are smart. Mine only have to see me put my coat on and they are at the door to go with me even if it's just out to the mail box. also if we have the car keys in our hands then they are at the back door to the garage waiting to go for a ride.
