25% are seriously overweight, and the problem is lack of discipline and exercise. Their attention span is too short to think of the future, and they don't show the discipline neccessary to stay in shape for their future.

I'd say the causes for this might be because of the fact that many young people today don't go out and play baseball, basketball, football, etc. after they get home from school. I am an adult now thirties but when I was a kid I used to get together with kids on our block and get a sports game going. We loved it. Almost every day. Kids now go straight to the computer or cellphone after school now rather than exercising. Also, processed foods are a problem. There are a lot of sugars in today's processed foods. And that can lead to some serious weight gain.

The teenagers of today have been spoiled by the last of the babyboomer generation, their parents. They have been given everything possible to aid in their poor health. Video, games, tevevision, cable tv, cell phones, text messaging. They have fed them though mostly fast food. Even home cooked meals are from pre boxed foods. Their parents are so busy trying to earn money, to take the time to feed them healthy meals. They are learning by example. The parents are grabbing fast food on the way home instead of cooking a well balanced meal. They give their children money without earning it. Teenageers are given too much privilege these days. They need to get involved with outdoor activities, and also healthy home cooking........

lack of sufficient exercise and a caloric excess of highly processed foods is the cause of obesity.
plain old bad parenting is a major cause of obesity in children today. the child learns most of it's eating habits from the parents and life at home. if the cabinets are filled with junk foods and the child is allowed to snack when bored, eat until full, etc. all of these negative behaviors have a cumulative effect. typically non-athletic adults have non-athletic children when combined with a bad diet and insufficient level of daily activity the only end result could be a rise in obesity and a decrease in the health of children. study has also shown that the child of 2 obese parents has the greatest chance of becoming obese.

There are several reasons for this.
1. Poor examples
2.Kids don't have as much physical activity as they used to.
3. Our food lacks nutrition so a short time after we eat, our body has still not received what it needs (nutrition) so it tells us it's hungry again. And we eat more.
4. Even our healthy foods (fruits and veggies) are sprayed with chemicals to protect them from being eaten by animals and insects. There is research that shows the more toxins we take in, the more water and fat we need to protect our bodies from these toxins.

Never eating a sit down meal. Parents who don't cook a real meal but tote home fast food. School cafeterias which have the idea that pizza from a box and a handful of salty potato chips is good nutrition.
It's just everywhere. And kids won't do the right thing on their own.

When I was a kid we enjoyed playing outside. You name it we played it. Sports, games, climbing trees, riding bikes,etc...It was no fun to stay inside and watch the tv. Another thing, junk food was not popular 20 or 30 years ago like it is now. If my mother and father took us kids out to eat at a restuarant it was decent food, not a fast food place. But mainly most meals were made at home.
I have taken youth groups at church on outtings and alot of them would have to sit down on a bench to rest as if they were 75 or 80 years old. And this includes outting s to an amusement park. I'm talking about kids from age 8 to 17. To be that out of shape at that age is pitiful

It's a combination of the lack of exercise and the AWFUL American diet. If we didn't drink so much soda and eat so much dairy (our consumption has increased considerably, right along with high fructose corn syrup), it wouldn't be so bad.
Of course, parents are too scared to let their kids play outside and then you toss in the internet and video games and telephones and kids are happy to sit around the house stuffing their faces.

i think there are many things that cause this conflict. video games and the INTERNET would be my top 2 choices. they keep kids inside and off their feet. plus alot of kids talk about how they spend so much time playing video games or surfin' the net, its almost like an addiction. the world is changing, but we still need to emphasize the importance of exercise and fitness.

two parents often work in today's society so the parents are less likely to cook dinner. years ago many women stayed at home with the kids and cooked dinner. now-a-days the parents take the easy way and chose the fast food route. plus there weren't as many video games and tv stations as there are today.

I think a lot has to do with technology. 50 years ago if kids were bored they went outside and ran around with their friends. Now they chat on the internet, play video games, and drink soda/eat junk food.
