Don't touch the antenna, adjust it by touching the plastic base.
You'll get the signal correct the first time......
The reason it looks good with you touching it is because your body is mostly Conductive liquid AND it has a lot of width and height to it, allowing better levels of GAIN .....

Because you become part of the antenna. Sounds like you need a larger antenna or to mount one on the roof.
What the other person said about 2009 is WRONG. It's not that nothing will be broadcast over the air, it's the EVERYTHING will be broadcast in a digital format. You'll need a new digital tv, to pay for cable or satellite, OR to purchase a digital converter box for your analog tv. The government will provide coupons to buy two converters per household. In the end, the picture will be much better, HD over the air, better sound, and more free channels available. www.dtvspeak.com for more information.

When you touch the surface of the antenna, the surface of your skin becomes part of the antenna so the TV gets a better signal.
You probably need an outdoor antenna.
Note: You can take 2 sheets of aluminum foil and fold to make a triangle around the ends of the ears to increase the surface area of the antenna.

If the bunny ears were the correct length and positioned at optimum for your location your aerial would be at RESONANCE hence touching it would make the pic worse as you would be DE TUNING it with your body !!. The answer then is to improve your bunny ears either by length or position or better yet get an out door aerial like the 8 Bay bow tie like TV Techman talks about ! I bet if you touch that it will NOT improve the pic !!

You can try a set of amplified rabbit ears. Get one that also has the loop on it - they will pick up UHF channels too and you will be able to use the same antenna when the "Big Switch" happens 2009.
The amplified sets are the ones you plug into the wall.
