I have the dvd player hooked up to the theater reciever via HDMI and a coaxial cable. I have an HDMI going from the theatre reciever to the t.v. I would like to run an HDMI from the digital cable box to the theatre reciever. When I did it I got a picture but no audio. Any suggestions???
Thanks

Most likely because your cable box does not output audio through the HDMI or your receiver doesn't pass it through its inputs (i noticed your DVD player has a coaxial cable run as well I assume for audio). The connection has this capability although not all electronics manufacturers use it and a lot of low to mid level pieces that have these connections just use them for the video aspect. If your cable box has an HDMI video out for HDTV it must have a digital audio out (either optical, coaxial or both). Use that for your sound and call it a day. Digital audio is digital audio and it won't matter if it's passed through an HDMI or an optical cable.

If you already confirmed that both pieces DO have HDMI audio capabilities and you are dead set on running 1 cable, make sure the connections are setup to pass this signal. A lot of cable boxes have settings to adjust video and audio outputs and it may not be set to pass a digital audio signal. Check your receiver too as there may be an input setting that needs to be adjusted as well.

Hope that helps

a) You don't need the coax cable from the DVD player to the receiver. HDMI can pass both audio and video. You may need to go to the DVD setup and specify audio to come out of HDMI.

b) Make sure your receiver can process Dolby Digital. If not, change the digital output of your DVD player to PCM

Easy to explain run the hdmi for the picture and use your rca cables for the audio give it a shot. I will bet when you read this you'll be like why didn't I think of that.
