My son still takes a bottle and is 10 and a half months. He has sips from a sippy cup when he is having solids. I think you should start if they can hold a bottle by themselves and make a gradual transition.
I also think you should transition from sippy cup to a regular cup as soon as they get the hang of the sippy. I hear sippy cups are not recommended for long term use. I have given my son sips from a usual cup many times and think that you can skip the sippy cup altogether if you want.

I started my girls using sippy cups when they started drinking juice at around 6 months. They never drank juice from a bottle. When they turned 1 year old, I started them drinking milk from a cup as well and had no trouble taking away their bottles at 12 months.

I started giving my youngest a sippy when he was 7/8 months old. Right around the time he started drinking juice. I never put juice in a bottle.

well I would start giving it a 6 or 8 months so they can play with it and figure it out, then at 12 months slowly start taking bottle away and giving only sippy cup.

My grandson is 3 and has been using them since about 9 months. The bad news is his teeth are terrible (3 cavities). His dentist says that sippy cups are very damaging as they cause the child to suck drinks through the front teeth.

I started mine on sippy cups at around 8 months old. I would offer it to her while she was eating her meals and snacks. She had a hard time learning to use it, but she eventually caught on. It takes patience.
