They don't have periods - they have heat cycles.

And it depends - small - medium sized dogs have their first heat around 6 months, while many large and giant breeds don't have their first until 9 months to 1 year.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://bitly.im/xbunJ

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

4-6 months of age, more commonly from 6 months old.

It isn't a 'period' however, it's a 'season'. Humans have periods, they occur at the end of ovulation when the unused egg is being flushed from the womb. An animal's season occurs while they are ovulating, there is a lot less blood involved.

It's important to spay dogs before they have their first heat - so this is done from 5 months of age - as this gives them their maximum protection against mammary cancer when older. The chance of avoiding this goes down with every heat that they have. Spaying also protects against ovarian and cervical cancer, and pyometra.

Dogs come on season at varying different ages.I have had dogs come on season at 6 months and others that haven't come on season for the first time until they were 3.So it will be vary hard to tell from when she came on season as to how old she is.But I have found a general rule of thumb would be between 12-18 months. How though do you know that her first season was a month after you found her?She could have had a season 6 months or 12 months prior to you finding her.

Hi Petelee - Dogs don't have periods; the have heat cycles. These generally start around 6 months old, but some dogs wno't get one until 1-2 years old.

It's best to have your dog fixed by 6 months old to prevent pregnancy and lower the risk of tumors and various cancers. Unless your dog is a show dog or competitive dog, she should really be fixed. Here are the AKC guidelines to breeding your dog: http://www.akc.org/breeders/resources/guide_to_breeding_your_dog/index.cfm If you can't follow them, then you'd be a backyard breeder - a really horrible thing. So, get her fixed and be a resopnsible owner! : )

usually females begin to come in season at around 6-8 months. but most importanly it depends on the time of year. dogs come in season twice per year in the spring and in the fall. depending on when your dog is born will determine if she has her first heat cycle at 6-8 month or closer to 12. this is because the female may be a little too yound for the her first cycle so she'll skip it and it will resume in the fall.
for example if your dog was born closer to the end of the year oct, nov-ish she may skip the spring cycle and her first would be during the fall.

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tinyurl.im/memMo

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

All of you are clearly mistaken, when i was a baby my mom had a dog that had her period burst all over the house. They do. So ignore everyone above if you're reading this. it is from 6 months to 10 years. Thanks for reading!

By now, after reading all the above answers, you know when she will cycle.

I would strongly advise that you get her spayed before she comes into heat. The last thing you need is a bunch of puppies.

If you paid a thousand or two for her you might want to get her championed out before you breed her. The perfect breeding age is between 2 & 3 years of age. After you have got all her championships out of the way. If she is a pet quality & not a high priced pure breed get her spayed before she goes into heat.

My Rottweiler female start at 6 months. But it depends on the dog too. 4-9months is when they usually start. I hope you don't breed your dog still she is about on her 2nd or 3rd heat.
