It actually varies by size. For larger dogs, yes about 7 years. For smaller ones, more like 5. (This makes sense as smaller dogs generally have longer lifespans and vice versa with large dogs).

Opinion varies but....
The first year or so is 12-18 to one. Because a dog is fully mature in a year or so So one equals our 15-18.
Next few years drop back depending on the life expectancy of that breed. (some dog naturally live only to 10 years or so) A dog is middle age at 4 to 5 (our 40-50). so 8 to one
Next years drop back, dogs age 2 to our 1, so a dog 6,8,to maybe 10 is approx 60-70 human years
Old guys 8, 10, 12 plus, could be considered 65 to 80 years old.
Next years will speed up
But taking an average of a particular breed the end results would be approx 7 years dog equal 1 year human. But just not in the maturity and age bracks.
Was that enough to thoroughly confuse you??
1-2 year old dog is mature
3-4 years is yound adult
5-8 is middle age
9-up is senior citizen

seven
If your dog is 20 pounds or less it will be 36 human years old when it reaches the age of 5 years. From then it will age about four human years to every one dog year. He will become a senior at age 7 (44 human), and a geriatric at age 14 (72 human years).
A dog between 21 and 50 pounds will be 37 human year old when it reaches the age of 5. It will age between 4 to 5 human years for each dog year after reaching 37. It becomes a senior at dog age 7 (47 human) and a geriatric at dog age 12 (human 69).
From 51 to 90 pounds a dog will be 40 human years old when it reaches its 5th birthday. From then it will age 5-6 human years for each dog year. At dog age 6 (45 human) it will be a senior, and a geriatric at dog age 10 (66 human years).
The larger dogs, over 90 pounds, age the fastest. By dog age 5 (42 human) they are considered to be seniors, and by dog age 10 (78 human) they are geriatrics. The human age to dog age ratio runs pretty close to the old 7 to 1 standard.

7,they are just a way to compare your human age with you dog age.say your age is 28 and your dog is 4 then its like the dog is the same stage of its full life as your stage.(4 X 7 = 28)
