"I'm doing this work because I love God."

or

"I'm doing this work so people at church will think better of me."

Which do you think it is?

I agree with jimmeisner and teran. A dead work is doing the right thing for the wrong reason. For example, a politician who makes sure a camera crew follows him when he volunteers at the soup kitchen during the campaign season.

First, we are saved to do good works. Good works do not save us but will be a result of our salvation. I believe dead works are anything we that is not for the glory of God but for ourselves. Example: We help out the neighbor next door because we want everyone to say, wow, isn't she a nice person, rather than do it for the glory of God. It all has to do with our motivation moreso than what we actually do.

According to 1Corinthians ; chapter 13 (the love chapter) anything not done out of love is 'dead works'.
You can be educated, sing beautifully, make all kinds of sacrifices, etc. etc. but if you do not have Love in your heart and motives, then ..... what have you really? Not much of anything.

Feeding the poor at a homeless shelter because it seems like a good thing to do, instead of doing it from your love of Christ.

Tithing, because you were told to do it, not because you trust God to take care of your finances.

Raising the dead in Jesus' name because that's how you were taught to do it at church, instead of because you trust Jesus to do all things.

Casting out demons in Jesus' name because you saw someone else do it.......

Dead works are works done without faith IN CHRIST.

Doing things for yourself instead of for the Lord or doing it for your own glory and not His. Doing it out of duty and not with joy...

What I do with ministry is because I love the Lord and want to do it for Him and His glory. You know, more of Him and less of me. I am His mouth piece, His willing vessel.

I know that ministry is not what gives me salvation. Salvation is a free gift from Jesus Christ, so that no man can boast. We can't earn it. Again, it's a free gift.

The guy giving out tracts to 'earn ' his way to heaven instead of actually caring about souls.
