Why Do People Get Christened

2017-01-11 05:01:23 · answer #2 · answered by anica 4 · 0 0

Many Christian denominations regard baptism (christening) as a sacrament that admits them into the family of God, but it is a potential that has to be realised by the person himself/herself when they are of age to make up their own minds. If the church they are being christened follows good practice, they should be told that baptism (adult or infant) does not 'admit' anyone into heaven. Even the Roman Catholics do not believe that baptism alone is sufficient to bring salvation. Many people, no doubt do it because they just want to keep with traditions, and it is a 'milestone' event that bestows a lot of jollity quite apart from the spiritual or religious significance.

Some denominations such as the Baptists do not practise infant baptism.

I don't know why someone would do that if they don't believe in God. I know me and my hubby don't currently go to church...we used to, but now we have jobs where we can't go most of the time. I just had my daughter 3 months ago and we had her christened (well in the baptist religion it's called a dedication). Basically, it's a charge to the parents and the people in the church to raise their child in a good home and always be a Christianly role model in front of the child. I just want my daughter to get the best start possible and it really helped get me and my husband in the right mind frame to be a good role model for her.

I will be christening my baby. I don't believe in God but my partner does and i respect his feelings. Also if my child wants/has to be buried in the family plot it would need to be christened (or at least that was what i was led to believe). However as stated my main reason is my partners beliefs

I'm thinking its tradition. Also, I've heard of some groups who believe a baby must be christened to get to heaven if the child dies in infancy.

I think a lot of parents have their babies Baptised because it is tradition. A bit like getting married in a church when you don't believe in God or having a church funeral when you are an aetheist. There is probably that 'just in case' mentality. There is vanity and an excuse for a piss up too that motivates people.

im not sure. doesnt make too much sense, but maybe it is tradition ?

i did christen my baby but i am religious and take my baby to church. i do however see many people never even seen at the church getting their baby christened.

some people do it because they are religeous (which i think is the only reason why you should do it) but some people do it because its traditional, to have a sort of welcome party for the baby or to appoint god parents. im not religeous so im not going to christen my child but my partner and i are going to choose people we want to have the child if anything happened to us (like god parents) and we will be having a sort of gathering to welcome the baby when shes born.

Perhaps they are giving their children a chance later in life to decide for themselves if they want to be a Christian.
