No, I don't think so.

"What's so funny 'bout spite love and understanding?"
-paraphrased from Elvis Costello and Sips.

No.

Groups do not have a monopoly on the definitions of love, hate or understanding. At best, these things are defined by the culture and the social milieu, not religion or lack thereof. Catholics and atheists alike will behave according to the definitions dictated by the society in which they inhabit, not the beliefs they do or do not follow. Individuals, however, may differ on their definitions, but I would think the differences would me slight and would be more of a semantical issue than one of the ultimate definition or meaning.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, Christians who preach love, but blow up abortion clinics. However, these are anomalies.

You cannot have them without God.

1) Spite must imply that you have a sense of morality you are working against. Evolution has no use for morals within survival of the fittest. Hence, God instilled this in us.

2) Love requires the giving up of ones own selfish desires in an attempted to satisfy another individual. This again is a wasted premis under evolution. Evolution would have acquired a protective, self preservation instinct (also a slight protective instinct regarding children inorder to ensure the continuation of genetic line) within humans; however not a love relationship where you have self sacrifice. Self sacrifice is counter-productive within evolution. Hence, God has instilled the ability to love within us.

3)Understanding is not a cut and dry answer either way. If you mean the 'understanding' associated with learning; this is just an extension of a developed brain. However, if you mean the 'understanding' associated with a philosophical view of life; then God is the way we would have attained this. Again, evolution would not have instilled this level of understanding within the human mind because it is a waste of time. Evolutions goal is to self preserve and procreation, beyond that it desires nothing. Hence to desire a deeper understanding of anything requires that God instill in humans the drive to search Him out.

More like this step 1 a believer :"I believe in God." Non Believer: I suppose santa and the tooth fairy are also real. Step 2 A Believer: "I believe my God created everything that there is ." Non Believer:your delusional show me your proof. Step 3 A Believer: "I believe my God loves everyone, is all-knowing, is everywhere, answers prayers, and will provide a life for his faithful after death." Non Believer:I believe in the flying spaghetti monster and his only begotten meatball your God is a murdering sadistic control freak. my version is more realistic than yours.
