Do most women still get paid when on maternity leave?

There are only 5 people total in our company- that's including the boss, three of my coworkers and myself.
FMLA doesn't apply to me.

My boss doesn't know that I'm pregnant- I'm only 4 weeks and I don't want to "jump the gun" and tell anyone too soon.

It generally depends on the company. Most companies, however, do not have specific "paid maternity leave" but some will have a policy that allows employees to accrue enough sick/vacation days to pay for an entire 6 week leave. Companies are, however, required to give leave to the employees, just aren't required to pay for it.

This is in the US - in many other countries, paid maternity leave is mandatory.

It is very uncommon in the United States. In the US maternity leave varies state to state and company to company. Many companies will let mothers use all of their unused vacation and sick time. In some states you can qualify for temporary disability for up to 8 weeks after giving birth. In that case you are paid a percentage of your wages, with a very low cap (it's $190 a week in New York State). Rarely will a company pay all or even a portion of an employees salary while they are on maternity leave. The US is way behind other counties, like Canada and some European countries where mother's get up to a year off paid to care for their newborns!

Generally it is the paid leave but because your company is too small and might not have a standard company policy as well thats why only good relation with the boss can work here and you will have to apply for the paid maternity leave. I think if company is good at its business they will surely favor you.

Paid maternity leave is NOT common (at least in California).....the only time you get "paid" for it, is if you've saved up enough vacation/sick/annual leave time so that you can have your full salary + benefits.

You can usually get disability leave from the state (short term disability) - and this is funded through employee payroll deductions - which usually means that if your employer doesn't deduct it from your pay and pay it to the state [whichever state you're in], then you're out of luck.

What state are you in? We can check the state's website for additional information....

maternity leave is considered like any sickness. it is not separate (at least here) so it's whatever sick leave you have accrued. you need to negotiate with your boss about this. because some might be unpaid leave etc. They might have to hire someone else temp while you are gone or they might not be willing to hold your job but no, in general you don't get paid for not working. unless you have accrued sick leave.

No, nowadays we have Family Medical Leave and either the father or mother can take unpaid time off to be with the child for a time.
