A bland diet. Rice, green beans and ground beef/turkey. Should take about a day or two. Monitor his water intake and try to figure out what in the past couple days was out routine for him. This way if it's a food allergy or food problem you will know for next time. If it lasts for more than three days consult a vet or take him to the vet.

A dog with the runs, usually responds well to dry rye biscuits or toast and hard boiled egg.

If you want an immediate result, kaolin and morphine.

As suggested the live yoghurt is good to bring back the natural friendly bacteria and the other suggestion what started the diarrhoea in the first place. It cannot always be established what the problem might be, in which case, a quick fix could work.

If it is an ongoing problem and none of the suggested natural suggestions work, starvation, rice and chicken, with lots and lots of water by the side. He could have a gastric virus in which case, loads of garlic and onion in his food.

I also use certain human cold syrups. It all depends what kind of diarrhoea we are dealing with. I personally would not recommend starvation, but for some dogs it is the right treatment and usually if the dog is unwell, he probably will not want to eat. Rice and chicken is the usual recommended food in situations like this. You may want to ask a friend who is Chinese or with Chinese connections, how to make congee. Excellent nutritious soup and will clean the system, without starving the dog.

I'm not going to tell you to take the dog to the vet, as you will know from experience, if this is necessary.

Boil two eggs until hard and give him one tonight and one in the morning, it'll 'bind' him up and calm his stomach. Keep him on a diet of plain boiled white rice with boiled or roasted chicken mixed in ( no bones! ) for a few days until he's back to normal toilet wise. Make sure he has access to lots and lots of clean cold water as having the runs will make him very dehydrated. If you've ever had an attack yourself you'll know exactly how he's feeling, the stomach cramps, being thirsty, feeling tired and grumpy and generally unwell. Keep his walks to a minimum as he's not a well boy but don't worry too much, he'll be back to his normal self in a few days.

The bigger issue is why your dog has the runs. If he's sick, been poisoned, or allergic to his food, then you need to address the issue, not the symptom.

If he's just going through a runny spell, then give him some white rice and boiled chicken and let him recooperate. However, if there are ANY secondary symptoms (blood in the stool, lethargy, shaking, fever, lack of appetite, coordination issues, etc), or if it continues for more than 24 hours, then he needs to get into a vet ASAP. He could die if the loose stools continue for too long.

I fast my dogs for 24 hrs (12 if they are under 6 months). Then I put them on a diet of rice and boiled chicken breast. Once stools return to normal I gradually reintroduce their kibble.

Canned pumpkin (100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix) is a great remedy for both diarrhea and constipation as well.

Pure canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie mix, just regular pumpkin) can work miracles on diarrhea and loose stools and is healthy for dogs. Just a little bit at a time, and lots of water of course.

first of all, why does your dog have this problem? Have you changed food? Discover the reason first. But you can give him/her yogurt and cottage cheese. This will fight any bad bacteria that may be in his/her digestive system.
