I want to be a translator. Do you think I should learn mandarin Chinese or cantonese?

Translation not only includes written dialect. What if I need to translate a recording, etc.
Also, cantonese is a sub-dialect of China's official Mandarin Chinese language. I think that the written characters are also different than Mandarin. I'm taking Mandarin Chinese now, but I was just wondering if I should also take Cantonese.

I think you should learn mandrin chinese because i think more people speak mandarin chinese than cantonese. im learning mandarin chinese.

Why not! if you are welling for learn with the chinese or cantonese, you can be a translator. as long as it doens't bother you..

Aren't they written the same? So from a translation (written) point of view, I don't think it would make a difference.
