I'm about the same height and weight as you and am definitely not a petite frame. I have alot of muscle but I think I could lose about 10 lbs of fat to look a little better. I think I'm considered about 10 lbs overweight though. I don't think I look fat compared to alot of people and am not overly concerned about it. Your weight range is probably between about 125 - 145 to be considered a healthy weight for your height. Don't sweat it, it's only a few extra vanity pounds! Skinny is gross anyway, who wants to hug a rack of bones!!?

Hi
The answer from the person recommending that you check your BMI was right on. At your height and weight, your BMI 24.2 which is in the healthy range.
Your BMI measures your body mass, your fat to lean ratio. To do this more accurately you would need an impedance test which will measure exactly how much fat and lean you have in your body. (Remember, you do have to have fat in order to survive - just not too much).
So, if you want to change how you look and how your clothes fit you, working out is key.
You want to do a cardio work out for 30 - 45 minutes a day every other day, and a weight lifting regimen every other day for the same amount of time. I would definitely hire a personnal trainer for at least two sessions to get your started. Be sure to give your body at least 1 day a week to rest. But 6 days a week to work out is good.
Eating well - fresh fruits and veggies every day, chicken or fish instead of red meat, whole grains, water (NO SODA) is also key. A nutritionist can give you an hour counsultation for a low fee and give you worlds of help. You wouldn't regret it.
You will begin to see good results within a couple of weeks !
Good luck.

Though 5'6" and 150lbs on average might be considered a little (LITTLE) overweight, you mention that you have a large frame. The bones add to the weight so people with large frames weight more and look better with a little extra meat on their bones.

As for average weight for your height, there are so many different opinions flying around that you should go by how you look and feel. How many of your 150lbs are muscle? That's more important, and muscle weighs more than fat.

A general rule you can follow, if you want, is to take 100lbs at 5 feet tall as the average, and add 5lbs for every inch of height. So in your case, 130lbs would be the average. Again, that doesn't consider muscle mass or frame-size.

You are right on the edge of a healthy weight for your height according to the US government. Go to this chart and you can get an idea of what I mean. http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/dga/dga95/fig03.html
Obviously, these types of charts don't take lifestyle into account and other factors so you need to decide for yourself whether or not you are healthy enough. You may choose to lose a few pounds to be more securely in the "healthy weight" zone, but if you feel like you're alright I wouldn't worry too much.
According to that chart I'm just about overweight because I'm so short but without a shirt you can easily see my ribs in front and back. I guess I have more muscle than fat so that makes me heavier? I don't know that you can get that sort of answer unless you are asking a doctor that knows your medical history.

Your weight is not technically overweight, but it very much depends on how much of your weight comes from fat. If you are larger framed or have more muscle than average, then obviously you can carry more weight without actually being overfat. 30% body fat is generally the cutoff for females, so if you have less than 30% body fat you are fine.

The average women your height in the US today weighs about 150lb-170lb.

You are slightly overweight. The best way to tell if your health is at stake is to measure your waist. Anything over 35" means you have a much higher risk for heart disease and cancer.

Instead of making excuses like "my whole family is big-boned", why not get on a healthy eating plan and get 30 - 60 minutes of exercise per day?

awe hunny, you are fine. Nobody has the same type of body as you even if they are the exact same hieght and weight or even bone structure. You are fine especially being big boned and , do you have alot of muscle? Muscle and bone weigh ALOT more than fat.

your best bet is to ask your doctor what the ideal weight range is your height and age. You could possibly try webmd.com if you don't have a family doctor. Even if you don't have a family doctor, you can call a doctor's office and ask to speak to a nurse practioner, or ask your school nurse, if you are still a student.

I'm 5'7 and 211 pounds. 150 isn't too far out there. Probably be healthy to drop a dime or two, but unless you're gross to look at, you're probably fine. Of course, I can bench a Buick, so my weight may not mean a lot...
