I am a huge fan of the 4.0, in my mind the straight six is nearly bullet proof and have stuck with the late 80's and early 90's Cherokee. Now I am in a bind and might be able to get into 93 Grand Cherokee with 170K miles for cheap ($2k). For the 4.0 I wouldn't blink, does the V-8 compare?

The pictures I've seen show the 93' in good repair, looks clean. My current 92' Laredo has so many fix it's that even new engine would still leave a few grand in misc. repairs .

If it's already got 170K miles, unless it's a diesel (which it doesn't sound like it is), you can just count every mile you get out of that engine going forward as gravy, i.e. built into the price. Think about it this way - assuming the bell housing and vacuum lines, etc. all line up the same for a V-8 and for the 4.0, could you (paper price) a replacement 4.0 knowing that 'soon' you may have to swap out the engines but then (assuming the rest of the vehicle is sound), you would have a virtual new motor on a 93 Cherokee.

never owned one but taken care of could last a while, but with 170K looking at a lot of miles for that motor.
if the jeep is 4x4 then its worth the 2K

It's impossible to answer becuase you never know how the previous own drove the car. They could be highway or they coudl be hard rush hour miles.

If the engine is still in good shape, it should be good for another 100G.
