We fly in to Pisa on Dec 31 and are spending one night there and then two nights in Florence. I just want to make sure I will be able to buy train tix at the Pisa train station and travel on Jan 1--can anyone assure me this is possible?

I assure you that's absolutely possible. In Italy trains are stopping just for strikes but never during holidays time. We have many strikes in Italy but this can't be done during holidays period. We have a specific law protecting the train travellers and ruling that strikes cannot take place during Xmas and other festivities included the New Year.
You'll be surely travelling by train on Dec.31/ Jan.1.
As to tickets you can buy them at the station, at automatic ticketing, tobaccos and newspapers kiosk .
One thing you should know about using the train system is that the tickets have to be time -stamped before you hop on the train. Look for the yellow boxes - usually near the tracks - to stamp yr ticket.
have a nice trip to Italy.

i'm a signaller on the railway on the line between Leeds and Sheffield. All i will say is that trains have been engaged on my line. i'd think of that trains have been working everywhere achievable as we usually classification it as a classic day. Sorry i could no longer help anymore.
