After the initial shock, you ask the surgeon if you can hold something and assist! Then wait for their shock!

Are you talking about when they dont use general anesthesia but use "twilight anesthesia " for surgery?
If so..i had twilight anesthesia also known as "twilight sleep" used for a surgery. I woke up a few times. The first time i was very out of it and just opened my eyes for a brief second and saw the drs but felt no pain, and then fell back to sleep. The 2nd time i was a little bit more awake/alert and could comprehend what they were doing for a few seconds. The 3rd time and the last i woke up and was in pain and i started crying, but i couldnt really speak. It didnt last long because they were almost done. If it would of gone on for any longer i probably would of tried to say something, but i just thought it was normal...
They had to use twilight sleep because at the end of the surgery they tell you to do things so you need to be somewhat awake in order to follow their instruction. I had jaw surgery..so after they were done the dr told me to open my mouth as wide as i could.
I much rather of been totally under, but it couldnt be done that way.

The chances of waking up in surgery are extremely rare, almost non-existant. If you did however, you would likely feel the same pain as you would if they never put you under in the first place. That is why they carefully monitor your condition while you are being operated on, so if you start to come out of the anesthesia, they can administer another dose to keep you under.

As it turned out twilight never worked. I opened my eyes and they tried to do the twilight again. it never worked so I asked to watch my surgery. Yes I did feel some pain. I was able to see some of what they were doing.

I couldn't see anything, but I think my eyes were covered. I started giving advice to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist quickly put me back under. No, I couldn't feel anything.
