I have 13 right now

When I first moved to this old house in the country, I had 2. Then this little runaway kittie showed up in the middle of winter, so I adopter her.

Next winter another kittie showed up. I let her in because I thought she was pregnant, but it turned out she was only that big because of worms. By the time I found this out, I was already in love with her, so she was adopted, and de-wormed.

The next kittie I adopted had been neglected by his previous 2 owners. I had to add him to the family to give him the life he deserved.

Last winter a pregnant stray showed up. I decided NO MORE CATS, so I prepared a safe place for her to have her kittens outside. When a male cat started attacking her, I knew she and her kittens would not be safe outside, so I brought her into the house so she could give birth and raise her kittens in safety. When the kittens were old enough to find homes of their own, I found that all the local shelters were so overflowing with cats, that they were euthanizing many of them, so I decided to keep the kittens too, rather than risk their lives.

They all get along pretty well with each other, although kittens can be such destructive little monsters. I don't recommend having so many cats, as it is a lot of work, but as long as they keep showing up at my doorstep, I will continue saving as many of these precious little lives as possible.

I currently have 3. At the height of my cat ownership, I had 12. My normal average was 9. I do not suggest this many. It is a lot of work (we had 10 cat boxes that we cleaned weekly and scooped daily) and is not very healthy for you or the cats! My advice is no more than 2. Any more and you could have issues with territory, marking, and attitudes. That is just my opinion, not a hard fact. Many people have good luck with large numbers. It is just a lot of work!
I used to let several of my cats outside. I wouldn't suggest that. One of my cats was shot by a neighbor. A cat can have a huge territory which they hunt, and the impact on the bird population can be damaging. Also, people can be mean to cats outside on their own.
