I think that many horrible things were made in the name of faith and religion all through history.

I think religion is opium to the masses. But I don't think the world would have been a better place without religion.

Religion was made by people to control other people. And if it wasn't religion it would have been something else. The world would have been the same because humans are humans!!!

What should change is this specific gene in humans that wants to control others. That's what scientist should focus on!!!

So, to answer you're question, I don't think that the world would be peaceful period, with or without religion. The world would be peaceful without human beings. Unfortunately!!!

Not faith; howver differences of religious beleifs .... YES!

Many religions have (or have had in the past) an extreme approach which produces, or produced, practices which are not acceptable to some people: e.g. extreme restrictions on female dress, and severe restriction on diets and activities on certain days of the week. Some people feel these measures are a distortion of the faith in a God who advocates universal love. Others see the measures as a clear indication that religion is fundamentally misguided.

While Christianity, Judaism, and Islam all claim to worship the same god, each religion has different beliefs. Jews believe that their deity is the one and only God. He created the earth in 7 days and will one day send the Messiah to earth to deliver them from their oppression. Christians accept this same God, but believe that the Christ has already appeared in the form of Jesus. Unlike the Jewish belief of Christ, the Christians proclaim that He came to earth to set God's children free from sin, rather than from oppression. Muslims believe in the same God as the Jews and the Christians. Like the Jews, they differ with the Christians as to the deity of Jesus, but accept the Virgin Birth as a miracle of God. The role of Jesus in Islam is as the Messiah and amongst the distinguished prophets, one of whom is Muhammad, believed to be the final and last messenger.

The differences among religious beleifs have caused and are still causing strife among humanity, just take a look at the history of the human race with all the wars among the following are:

Dechristianisation in the French Revolution

Revolt in the Vendee

Cristero War

Reformation in Germany and the rest of Europe

Red Terror · Red Terror in Spain

Cultural Revolution · Reign of Terror

Inquisition

French Wars of Religion

St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre

Khmer Rouge

Kulturkampf

Crusades

Religion was the reason why the pilgrims left England and colonized the new land = America.

Religion - Catholic vs Protestantism caused great havoc in England and France.

There are many reasons for wars and hate. The 2 biggies are politics and religion. The terrorism overtaking the world today is empowered, if not caused, by Islamist fundamentalism.

Actually, come to think of it, it's very interesting that hate and religion have the same roots: ignorance and fear.

Prehistoric man, as soon as he developed enough language to contemplate life and death, invented the concept of soul (spirit) to assuage his fear of death. Humans are uniquely conscious of their own impending deaths. Although the invention of souls doesn't constitute a religion, religion and God depend on the concept of souls. It was inevitable, via animism and anthropomorphism, that religions would evolve. Man, in his stifling ignorance, developed souls to deal with his fear of death. Fear of death brought gods into this world.

Hatred and war have the same roots as gods and religion: ignorance and fear.

Ignorance is the mother of fear.
Fear is the root of insecurity.
Insecurity is what prejudice is all about.
Ignorance of ignorance precludes enlightenment.
Hatred and war are ignorance run rampant.

Do they? If so, what's causing faith and religion? It's not like they are a virus or an invader from outer space. They are man-made things, are they not?

Most people are "religious" in one way or another -- it's basically believing what you want to believe because you want to believe it. This describes virtually all of humanity.

I have a radical idea for you: maybe it's human nature that's causing wars and hate. Maybe it's perfectly normal for people to want to rip each other's guts out, while exercising a bottomless capacity for hypocrisy in justifying the most atrocious conduct. Maybe nothing short of an evolutionary change would put an end to wars and hate.

No, this is a simplistic view of history that just assumes something so it must be true. Clausewitz calls war the continuation of politics by other means. Wars are based on power and greed, not religion and faith.

Allow me the privlege of saying you're basically right on this, however there's a slight flaw in the question...It should read as follows: Is it misplaced faith and religion that cause war and hate? Than I totally agree. Faith placed properly can't cause war or spur hatred, generally speaking. PEACE!

wars are generally about the competition for limited resources.
in religion's case, people (membership) is a primary resource, and converting non-believers and eliminating competing religions is an end unto itself.
wars could be justified for that reason alone, which without the religious structure, would not be a reason at all.
and just like competitions between sports teams create feelings of embitterment between opposing players and fans alike, could the situation between competing religions be any less emotional?
