I just landed a job with a government contractor, my position will an office job on a base. I have really no idea how formal I should be. My job will be the IT manager. I have done work as a onsite tech for many years and have always been the guy who craws through attics and other dirty stuff so I was always in uniform. I know how to handle this job, I just have no idea how to dress? Any ideas!!! I will be doing easy IT stuff, lots of paperwork, but nothing dirty.

You should dress in a suit for the first week (at least the first day), although I'm sure the IT department will be a khaki with collared, long-sleeved shirt kind of place.

Two ways to go with this I reckon.

You could go for a suit with shirt and tie, which looks rather formal. It's also good in winter as it keeps the chill from your neck.

You could go without a tie because you can still look formal in a suit with just a patterned shirt, unfastened collar. Obviously slightly more appropriate in summer when it's warm.

I suppose it also depends on how flexible your employer is and whether they have a dress code policy.

It depends on your company's dress code, and what the other workers around you will be wearing. They may all be wearing jeans and a T-shirt, and that's probably fine if you are in a production environment. If you are interfacing directly with high-ranking officers on a daily basis, then I would suggest dressing at least business casual (collard shirt, dress pants, etc.).

First day, I would come in in a suit with no tie. Nice pants, nice shoes, and then during the day I would look at the others and be ready for my second day. Good luck for your job.
