My oldest son started reading at 3. He is now 9 (3rd grade) and reads at an 8th grade level. My middle son is 2 and can aready recognize about 90% of the letters in the alphabet but does not know the phonics. My youngest is 4 months and shows no interest in reading (just kidding). If your child is interested in reading I strongly recommend Bob Books. My oldest son loved them!

my first could read at 3 and was reading easy chapter books like the Magic Treehouse series just before turning 4.

my second could read easy readers at 4 and was reading full-fledged chapter books like A-Z mysteries by 6.

my third is 4 and shows no signs of reading yet, though she loves books.

my 4th has listened to The Very Busy Spider in excess of 1000 times. ;-)

(and it's very normal to start later, too.... the answers you get will be skewed towards the parents whose kids read early because most people aren't going to say "my kid was 7" even though there's nothing whatsoever wrong with that!)

My son started reading a few simple words around the time of his fifth birthday, just before starting Kindergarten. He didn't really start reading sentences until he discovered my old "Calvin and Hobbes" books, which he found highly motivating.

Shortly after his 4th birthday we found out by accident ourson had taught himself to read. Evidently he was watching the words as well as the pictures each night while we read to him. We had bought him a new book to take on a long airplane ride and he began reading it out loud to us as we waited to take off.

There's nothing better you can do for your child to prepare them for reading than reading to them as often as possible with as many different books as possible.
