Many smokers choose “low-tar,” “mild,” “light,” or “ultra-light” cigarettes because they think that these cigarettes may be less harmful to their health. Smoke from light cigarettes feels smoother and lighter on the throat and chest, but are not healthier.
The lower tar and nicotine numbers on light and ultra-light cigarette packs and in ads for these products are misleading, they are numbers from smoking machines that test every kind of cigarette the same way. People do not smoke the same way as the machines and every person smokes differently.
Tobacco companies designed light cigarettes with tiny pinholes on the filters. These “filter vents” dilute cigarette smoke with air when light cigarettes are “puffed” on by smoking machines, the machines to measure artificially low tar and nicotine levels.
The filter vents are uncovered when cigarettes are smoked on the machines. However, filter vents are placed just millimeters from where smokers put their lips. Smokers block the vents, which actually turns the light cigarette into a regular cigarette.
Some cigarette makers increased the length of the paper wrap covering the outside of the cigarette filter, which decreases the number of puffs that occur during the machine test. The tobacco under the wrap is still available to the smoker, this tobacco is not burned during the machine test. The result is that the machine measures less tar and nicotine levels than is available to the smoker.
Smokers, unlike machines, crave nicotine, they may inhale more deeply; take larger, more rapid, or more frequent puffs; or smoke a few extra cigarettes each day to get enough nicotine to satisfy their craving. This is called “compensating,” and it means that smokers end up inhaling more tar, nicotine, and other harmful chemicals than the machine-based numbers suggest.

Well, they aren't. The difference is in the filter. There are pinholes on the side of the filter. The idea is that when you suck on the filter, the pinholes allow air in to mix with the smoke, so in theory, you get less smoke and have a 'lighter' cigarette.
But, here's where the problem lies: folks who smoke regular cigarettes and go to lights or ultralights tend to draw harder to get more flavor and smoke, making the pinhole air mix less effective. They actually end up getting almost the same (and in some cases, more) smoke than a regular cigarette smoker.
There are no safe cigarettes.

Ultra light means a light taste. They have the same amount of nicotine as regular cigarettes do as long as you cover up the holes in the filter.

Ultra light or regular cigarettes are still bad for your lungs and body. ultra light is a marketing ploy and is NOT better, they have slightly less tar but not nicotine.
Quit smoking for your health and the health of your family.

It's just not as strong as the regular lights. It's not actually better for you. And just because the filter is longer doesn't mean it's lighter. The 100s type cigarettes have a longer filter but they are just as strong as the others.

All they do is put liitle holes in the filter so that when they test the cig. on a machine to measure nicotene and other stuff it comes out with much less but when your smoking it your mouth is around the whole filter so your getting the same crap as a reg. cig. on the machine only the end of the filter is being tested.

There is no safe cigarette. You can buy ultra lights, but will you smoke more of them because you aren't used to the "amount" of nicotine from your normal brand?

Ultra Light = less tar, more chemicals
You're better off with regular. Or rolling your own. If you get 100% tabacco and roll it yourself, you aren't getting the nasty chemicals. It is not the tabacco as much as it is the chemicals that are bad for you.
