Every year we buy half a beef, this year we used a different processor then usual and they packaged 5 or 6 lbs of seasoned ground beef in a bag for making burgers. Note: our order was frozen at the processor. I have always been told you cannot refreeze meat. So what can I do with this beef? If I make burgers can they be refrozen? Or should I just plan a big BB-Q and get rid of them all at once? Maybe a large pot of chilli :)

Thanks in advance.

If the burgers have been cooked then I would feel safe refreezing it. But I wouldn't risk refreezing raw meat.

Make some burgers and eat them that day. Brown the rest of the meat in a large pot. Drain off grease, pkg for taco, spaghetti, etc and refreeze. If you make burgers from thawed meat, it is not safe to freeze them unless you cook them first. They are really not very good that way.

If the beef has been refrigerated and not gotten above 40 degrees it can be refrozen. Most of the meat and chicken you buy at the supermarket has been frozen. You bring it home and put it in the freezer. If it has been out and gotten warm then cook it and eat it.

You can only refreeze the hamburger after it has been cooked first. So when you unthaw a package you could make extra burgers and freeze them after they are cooked. Or like you said, make a big batch of chili and freeze some, or just fry up some of the meat and you can add it to chili or spaghetti sauce or lasagna or make tacos etc. later.

I would not re-freeze uncooked ground beef.

I would cook and freeze the following: chili, burgers, meatloaf, meatball and meat sauce. I would try to make it all the same day the meat thawed.

Not in it's raw form. Yes you could make a big batch of Chili or pasta sauce, a meatloaf etc.Once cooked and cooled you can then freeze. Happy cooking!

I purchase already packaged and it says "use or freeze by.." for the date. I am sure wal mart sends it out frozen since I have gotten it partially frozen from them before. I say go ahead and freeze it again. Just use good freezer grade bags and I would even double bag it.
