First of all. This is a very loaded question.
A good answer is it depends on what you want to be mentor in. If it is religion then no an atheist can not be a good mentor but if it money or sports then may an atheist might be a very good mentor. As a christian, I have an atheist as mentor in Business. My boss is mentoring me in the way of the business we are in. He does not believe in GOD but He is teaching me a lot.

I'm personally an atheist, but sure I would help someone out.
I'm a teacher, a tutor, and I've mentored young people for a number of years.
What hope would a man with a family need? Resume advice? Job searching? How to diaper a baby?
I can do all of those things. Specifics please.

I have helped out a lot in my community. I've tutored grade school children and I have done some volunteer work. All based on my own desire to help out and not so I'll be rewarded with an afterlife.
I can't give you hope, you have to find that for yourself.

I am an atheist and if you could afford me I could help you by all means. First I would not offer you fairy tails as hope. I would give you hope for success in the world.

You can always have hope. The important thing is to realize that you are responsible for your actions and that you need to work to get to where you want to be.

what seems to be the problem?
what hope do you need?
I could give you hope that your children could make good decisions without need for a supernatural father, they would be content with you....
and that your wife might care about you more than say a 2000 year old jew-zombie...

I'd give you advice. It wouldn't be my job to give you hope, it would be your job to create a situation that creates the possibility of a better future.

Do you for some reason believe that atheists are incompetent pigs with no goals, dreams, or morals?
