Just go along with whatever they're saying for a bit, then get really angry and say something like "My phone is tapped, the police are on their way, you won't get away with it for much longer, suckers!" then do a maniac laugh and hang up.
Or pick up the phone and say "You're late! I've been waiting all day for you to call!" Then before they can say anything, start talking really dirty. This would work really well if the caller is the same gender.
You could always just act psychotic, claim you can't stay on the phone very long because the aliens are slowly eating your brainwaves over the line. Or you could just start blabbering, telling them your hopes and dreams and plans for the day and all your problems. You can tell them that who ever they're looking for died, and to show respect for the dead.
Sometimes all you have to do is say you dont have any credit cards.

Couple of things you might try. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_Not_Call_Registry has links to several registries.
My dad used to keep 'em waiting a bit. They'd call and pitch something. He'd say, "Can you hold a bit? I'll get ____ " Then he'd go watch TV, fix a sandwich, etc. In about ten or fifteen minutes, he'd go pick up the phone. Usually they were gone. This ties up your phone a bit, but it burns the telemarketer's biggest resource, his time.
One more thing- you can talk to your phone company and get a caller ID feature that won't accept calls unless the caller unblocks his number. Lots of shady marketers won't do that.

I always liked the approach Jerry Seinfeld used in an episode of his show. He said to the telemarketer, "I don't have time to talk now. Can I call you at home later? Oh, you don't like to be called at home after work? Now you know how I feel!", and he hung up.
On a more serious note, you can ask to be removed from the list. If you do that, they're required by law to do it, and if they continue to annoy you, you can report them to the FCC and they'll be fined.

Smartest thing to do is to place them on call blocker.
If you want to mess with them, start the conversation then tell them you have an incoming call and will place them on hold. Put the telephone down and go do something else for about 1 hour.

I tell 'em to hold on while i get my wife, cuz she is interested in what they are pitching. Then set the phone down and about 5 to 10 minutes later pick it up and tell 'em, "Heh, i just remembered I'm not married anymore." and then hang up
