Had a mouth abscess since Wednesday, my cheek has really swollen up and feels like I have a golf ball wedged under, I can’t open my mouth more than 1cm. I tried to get a dentist appointment but they can’t see me for 5 days (typical) so I went to the Doctors surgery who gave me ‘Amoxicillin’ have been on this now for 30 hrs but still there is no improvement, in fact I feel worse now than I did before. How long does it take for the antibiotics to kick in as I meant to be going to a friend’s 30th birthday tomorrow and don’t wanna turn up looking like the elephant man.

Also would it be safe if I needled the blister and then spat all the fluid out.

is your prescription for 500mg 3 times a day? Check as that was what I was meant to have but the half-wit pharmacist gave me 250mg ones instead so I doubled up the dose as per a doctor's advice (she is a family friend). Follow the course and if its bad tomorrow morning go to the chemist and see the pharmacist and tell them the situation.

I know how you feel as I was at a wedding reception the day it was at its worst and every time my friend talks about her wedding I wince at the pain I was in as I will never forget it. It took at least 24 hours to kick in. Take some strong painkillers as well, Ibuprofen etc.

Hope you get better soon.

It will take a few days before the antibiotic works effectively on the abscess but the swelling may begin to dimish sooner. Lancing the abscess yourself is a bad idea since it's difficult to know exactly where the abscess is if it's in the gum and the last thing you need is to introduce further bacteria. The swelling is probably not as noticable to others as you might imagine. It is important you take the Amoycilliin at regular intervals as directed and finish the entire course. It may help to rinse your mouth regularly with a warm saline solution.

Hi, I am a dentist. Most likely the reason for your problem is an infection in the bone under a bad tooth. You should see a dentist immediately. Neglecting to do so can result in death, in rare cases, caused when the infection travels to the brain and causes abscesses there as well. I can say that the spot is most likely not cancerous, because that would not give you a sore throat. This is caused by the draining of the bacteria in your lymphatic system. The solution for this problem is to get the tooth root canal treated, or taken out. Most likely in a case like yours it sounds if though the tooth has been bad for a while and is most likely nonrestorable. Hope this helps

Under no circumstances should you release the pus by using a needle. This type of stuff should only be done by a medical professional. You can end up making matters worse. If the abcess is really killing you, go to either the emergency room or an emergency dentist. Sometimes, when you call your regular dentist and tell them its an emergency, they'll squeeze you into their schedule earlier.

Keep taking the antibiotics - you'll feel better after 2-3 days.

AN antibiotic starts wr\orking as soon as you take in that it starts killing the bacteria...Unfortunatley for you it takes anywhere from 48 to 72 hours and sometimes longer before any physical improvemnets are noticed by the patient

Don't breal the abcess , you could end up getting some bacteria in the bloodstream and then my friend you are up a huge creek with noi paddle

Kep taking the antibiotic until it is complete...just go to the party and tell people whats wrong...no shame in having a dental problem and being honest about it

can't you go to the emergency dentist? my sister did, you shouldn't have to wait. antibiotics should kick in after 3 days but any antibiotics ive been given from the dentist have always been really strong, so strong that you CANT drink alcohol at all it will make you sick where as when I have been given amoxicillin it says AVOID alchohol, dont think amoxicillin is that strong.

AUSTIN,
USUALLY IT TAKES ANTIBIOTICS 2-3 DAYS TO BEGIN WORKING. THIS DOES NOTHING FOR INFLAMMATION.
USE HOT MOIST COMPRESSES TOGETHER WITH ADVIL 2-3 TABS EVERY 4-6 HOURS. TOGETHER THIS WILL HELP BRING DOWN THE SWELLING.
BY TOMORROW, SATURDAY, YOU'LL STILL BE SWOLLEN.

You could try the local dental teaching university clinic-
or a special needs clinic-call your out of hours doctor and ask for details-or look it up in yellow pages.

Yes, If you can stand the pain, just lance it. Also you must rinse well with a real strong mouthwash or some high proof liquor.
