It depends on one's definition of atheism. A lot of atheists argue that "not believing in god(s)" is sufficient for being called an atheist.

Personally, I disagree. I think that definition is too loose and includes things like rocks under the definition of atheists. I think the definition should include that a person has a capacity to understand the concept of God. Since I don't think babies do have such a capacity, I don't think they're atheists.

Obviously, I don't think they're theists either; I just think the terms don't really apply to them. For example, you can't have a green number (I mean the actual number, not a numeral) and I don't think you can have an atheist baby.

(Unless it's one of those superbabies from Germany)

i do believe all humans are born without the knowledge of some higher being.

Religion is something that is taught/learned. Religion is not an inherited trait, you have to be exposed to it in order for you to formulate some idea of what you think really is out there.

Do I think that there is 1 correct "GOD" or religion. NO!!

I believe the idea of "someone greater" than us, is a comforting fact that people use so that they don't feel like what we do here has no purpose.

Think of it this way.....no god, or no punishment in the after-life for crimes you commit today..what kind of world would this be. So the idea of "he will be judged when he dies" comforts people, because if there was no hell or heaven and everyone just wound up in the same place no matter how they lived their lives would really put things here, onto a different way of living.

I was born to be a free-thinker. I had no idea of religion until i was in first grade when another kid spoke of God. I remember this vividly. She told me about a "ghost" in the sky who judged people good/bad and sent the bad ones to hell (i still thought hell was a bad word, so by this time i was going for the teacher) and i thought it was total nonsense. So, i wasn't born with religious beliefs, I didn't know of God before I was told, and therefore i disagree with the people who say we are born of a certain religion.

Every human is born an atheist because religion is learned...This is also why most religions require you to baptise or otherwise introduce your new baby into the religion... Ever think of that?

If babies were born a certain religion, there would be no need for the ritual.

Every human being is simply born not knowing much except as it experiences things and is taught, I'll leave the rest of the logical progression of thought to you.

Technically, atheist means one who lacks belief in god(s). So technically this is true. However atheism is a spiritual stance, so it's also untrue because those too young to think for themselves are incapable of having a stance.

It's all in how you want to shuffle the cards.

Of course it's true. We're born LACKING theism, and that is in it's very essence ATHEISM. Atheism needn't be active and explicit. There's such a thing as an "implicit" atheist: one who lacks belief due to an inability to grasp such concepts or due to zero exposure to the god concept. In that way, ALL babies are "implicit" atheists.

Well, I can only speak for myself. I had no concept of a god or anything resembling a god until my preschool teacher started telling us stories out of the Bible. Being 4 years old, I took it as "Well, I've never heard of that, but if a grown-up says it's true, it must be true." Many years later, I realized this wasn't the case, but at the time, I accepted it.

Well...the Muslims say we are all born as Muslims. I denounced my Islamic status at 2 minutes old.
