Yes. I have an aunt who is Mormon and she moved away from where the rest of the family is to go to college at BYU and still lives in that area.

In a way, yes. But not really. Unlike Muslims who believe every truely devout Muslim needs to travel at least once to Mecca, we don't feel that way about SLC. And those of us we didn't grow up in SLC do not feel like it is our homeland like Jews do with Jerusalem. However even those of us who have converted feel a certain feeling about SLC because we feel we'll be accepted there if no where else on the planet. We won't have to worry about being looked at funny if we mention that we're going to the temple, or that we can't go to the movies tonight because we're doing Visiting Teaching or Home Teaching. It has a lot of Mormon history and I think it has a justifiable soft spot in the hearts of all Mormons. I think all the major church history cities are like that, but because the Pioneers weren't run out of SLC, it holds a little better place in our hearts.
Of course there's danger in feeling idealistic about SLC because it's not the way many converts assume it to be, and isn't the same way it was even 30 years ago.
Many Mormons look forward to their first visit to SLC if they have never been there, or were not raised in UT.
We don't "pilgramage" anywhere, although there are more than a few who take family vacations to Palmyra, NY, Kirtland, OH, Independence, MO as well as various locations all over UT.

Salt Lake City is where the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, it is not considered a "Mecca" per se. Each local area where there is a church unit called a "stake" is where the local members gather and congregate and gather of religious instruction and could be considered a mecca of sorts.
My opinion

Nope. According to my LIMITED understanding of Mecca and Muslims; Muslims pray facing Mecca, if a Muslim has the means and opportunity he must attempt to travel there at least once (is that correct?). For Mormons, we don't have to pray facing any direction and we certainly don't have to attempt to travel there. It is where the headquarters of the church is located, and there are a lot of Mormons that live there. (Birds of a feather type of deal.)

do not joke on Mecca (34) (Muhammad), consider when Abraham prayed, "Lord, make this (Mecca) a peaceful territory and save me and my offspring from worshipping idols. (35) Lord, the idols have misled many people. Whoever follows me is my friend. As for those who disobey, You are certainly All-forgiving and All-merciful. (36) "Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a barren valley near your Sacred House so that they could be steadfast in prayer. Lord, fill the hearts of the people with love for them and produce fruits for their sustenance so that they may give thanks. (37) Lord, You know all that we conceal or reveal. Nothing in the heavens or the earth is hidden from God. (38) It is only God who deserves all praise. I praise Him for His giving me my sons Ishmael and Isaac during my old age. My Lord, certainly, hears all prayers. (39) Lord, make me and my offspring steadfast in prayer and accept our worship. (40) Lord, on the Day of Judgment, forgive me and my parents and all the believers." (41) (Muhammad), do not think that God is unaware of what the unjust people do. He only gives them a respite until the day when the eyes will stare fixedly, (42)

No. Mecca is much more than that. It's the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), something the Mormons can't claim for SLC and their "prophet"...
Also, Mecca is where the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received his first revelation, amongst other things...
Please research more on the history of Mecca. It's been around a lot longer in history than SLC.

Might say that. People want to go to SLC but it is more just the fact that they WANT to go.
Personally, I think I live in "Zion" and it isn't Utah!
