Hey, there is a soldier that has been injured in Iraq and is currently in transport to Germany, his wife does not have a passport. Is there any way to get a passport back asap or can she fly via military without a passport to be here with her husband?

She didn't get a passport due to the fact she was never told she needed one. Being a military wife myself, I have never been told to get a passport for my husbands deployments.

Thanks for everyone's kind words and help. I'm actually stationed in Germany down the road from the hospital, so the family will be staying with me, its just a matter of getting them here.

Before she gets on a plane to Landstuhl, she needs to find out how long her Soldier will be there. Passports can be expedited, but it will still take a few days. By the time the passport comes, the Soldier may be in the States. Her casualty assistance center on post can keep her updated the best out of anyone. If you need to find a casualty assistance center follow the link below to find the nearest one. Accomodations on post are limited and she should go to the LMRC web page to see if space is available at the Fisher House. It is very expensive in Germany right now due to the Euro rate. Thank you for helping your friend in such a tragic time. My prayers are with both of you.

Chrissy:
It is very common for the State Dept. to issue passports on an emergency basis. Tell your friend to call the National Passport Information Center (1-877-487-2778) and explain the situation. They will make an appointment for her at the nearest passport agency, and the passport will be issued on the day of the appointment. For more info, see http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_831.html
P.S.: Just for anyone for the future: whether or not you actually intend to travel abroad, it's ALWAYS a good idea to have a valid US passport. You never know.

Contact the American Red Cross, they will be able to give her the assistance she needs.
If you are on military orders and you have a valid ID you do NOT have to have a passport to get back into the country. I'm not sure if that goes for family/dependents though.

they may be able to get her an expedited passport (which is really expensive) or an entry permit which is only good for like 30 days to get there and back and only takes like 2-3 days. Its always a good idea if your a military spouse to have a passport in case something like this happens.

They can expedite a passport if they have to. Talk to the passport office on the base.
They may allow her to go without the passport on special orders, but I do know they can get passports quickly if they need to. I do not think they are a regular passport, its a temporary thing like when you lose passport overseas.

You would just have to get an expedited passport. It costs twice as much, but that's what you have to do. Family services on base should be able to help her. And uh, I wasn't briefed on anything when my husband left for Afghanistan, I was flying blind, I still don't have a passport.

She will need a passport to get in to the country. I lived there for a few years, and had to have one, it was checked leaving and entering the country. The military maybe able to help her get one faster, but she will have to call her point of contact.

Contact the military liason person for the hospital in Germany--or the unit commanders for the soldier.
Most units have people to help solve these types of problems.
Contact the Red Cross national office and they will be able to help.
Lastly contact your local federal representative--they love this stuff.
Good luck--
God Bless you
say thanks to the troops.
