Okay, I know this is really personal but my sister is wanting to go to school to become a Medical Assistant I wanted to know, how much do they really make per hour? Please be honest and also include your city/state and whether you work in a hospital or in a private practice. Thank you so much!

Again, the salaries are incredibly varied, not only all over the US, but in each city.

However, there are really just way too many MA schools in most areas of the country. Make sure she looks into the local job market.

An example is San Antonio, TX. The range is from $7.90/hr to $14.00 per hour with most making around $10 - $10.50 an hour. However, there are approximately 20 schools training MAs in the metropolitan area and for the past 2 weeks there have been 15 adds for MAs in the same area. So less than one person from each school could get one of the available jobs in the past 2 weeks. As there are multiple classes from each school, and several iterations of classes per year, you can see there are many more graduates than available jobs. A local barbeque chain offers $8.00 to start without paying for training.

I have never hired a MA that I did not train myself as an extern out of a program, and I did not hire all of the externs that came through my clinic. Usually only one a year. Also when I moved from one clinic to another, I usually took my MAs with me.

The job market is usually not as good as the schools advertise.

It really depends on what city that they work in and what type of practice they work for. From my experience I have found that derm or specialty pracitces pay a little more than the regular general provider.

Starting off as an MA is a good stepping stone. If you don't like the field atleast you know that you haven't invested a ton of money into RN school. Atleast in California, it is hard to get into the RN programs with out going through a 4 year college. If you go through a technical school to get your MA cert. it will only take you between 6- 10 months.

Don't do it!! They are professional butt wipers and do all the crap work. I have some friends who work as MA and they make crappy money...10/hr in IA She should go for her RN it's a little more work but the jobs pay A LOT more and you get a lot more respect on the job. I started out going for my MA then saw what it was really like and I'm now getting my RN which only takes about 2 years and I'll make almost twice as much money! Just my two cents and I know MA's are important but if she's good in school she need to go for the RN.

as mentioned by others, it really depends on the location of the job. Here in suburbs of LA the pay is 15+ an hour.
here's a wonderful tool where you can plug in your zip code and they give you a range of salaries.
