My fiance really wants the wedding cake to be chocolate with fresh strawberries. I'm a huge fan of his idea (yummm!), but my mom said that we shouldn't do that because lots of people can't eat chocolate. Is that true? I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case for *dark* chocolate, but I think that lighter chocolate would be ok.

Our preference is to have one big, yummy cake rather than a separate bride's cake and groom's cake.

opinions, please! :-)

I like the idea of having layers of different flavors. Thanks for that suggestion.

And...mom isn't paying, we are. I just ask like to ask for input and opinions.

Non-traditional cakes are becoming more and more popular and I've seen beautiful wedding cakes that have chocolate drizzled on them with strawberries. Just stunning, and very memorable.

I personally do not know anyone who CANT eat chocolate. Some people monitor their caffeine intake, but there isn't that much of it in chocolate.

To ease your mothers worries, why don't you get the cake you and your fiance like, but get an inexpensive white sheet cake which can be kept in the back and cut and served at the same time as your decadent chocolate strawberry cake. You can get a large sheet cake for $20, and if your mother is anything like mine, $20 is a STEAL if it gets my mom off my back :)

My fiance is deathly allergic to chocolate. I have known one other person my whole life that has has this allergy. So yes, some people are allergic to chocolate ... I wouldn't go so far as to say a lot of people, though.
So, if that's your mom's reasoning, go with what you want. What if someone is allergic to traditional white cake? Allergic to frosting? Strawberries? No matter what kind of cake you choose, you run the risk of someone being allergic ... you can't avoid it. It's YOUR wedding, have what YOU want. If you're concerned about someone being left out, have a small dessert table next to the cake table that has a few alternate desserts for those who can't eat (or don't like) chocolate.

Many, many people have an intolerance of chocolate whether dark or milk, sweetened or unsweetened. And strawberry allergy isn't uncommon either. I'd go ahead and serve that delicious sounding strawberry & chocolate dream cake, but also have two simple alternatives on hand. First, a plain cake like white or yellow for those with chocolate or strawberry intolerance or allergy. Second, an "OK for diabetics" cake; diabetes is fairly common and your diabetic guests will be impressed with your thoughtfulness.

Neither cake need be large; in fact frosted cupcakes would be fine. And if there are leftovers, is it really that hard to give away cake?

I think people appreciate having something different. And, as a person with some food allergies, I know what I can't have and I accept that there are occasions when I cannot have something. It's just how life is. If you have white cake, there will be people who won't eat that either, if you have chicken, some guests will be vegeterians. You cannot possibly accomodate every single food situation for a crowd. It's best to get something people generally like (and that you actually want) and hope for the best.

My fiance and I are having chocolate. It's a small gathering so it won't be than many people. Everyone loves chocolate so it's not an issue. You can get each layer of cake to have different flavors or have cupcakes that are different flavors.

They can do cakes lots of different ways. You could have the cake be half and half or do different layers with different flavors. Honestly, if you want chocolate, then get it. If people don't want to eat it, then they won't. I'm sure the majority will and if there are leftovers, more for you!

I've never heard of "lots" of people that can't eat chocolate, though I am sure there are some. I would do a tier cake with one tier chocolate and the other white if it's that big a deal. For my wedding cake I wanted poppyseed and that's what I got - if someone didn't like it, oh well, you can't make everybody happy all of the time!

We're having chocolate with fresh strawberries. When I told people this- they got excited! It turns out people really aren't too found of white cake at weddings.
Ask a few key guests what they think. Then you will know if you want to go all chocolate, or half and half.

Go for it! We had an old fashioned chocolate cake for our wedding and it was such a hit. People were getting seconds and thirds. There might be people out there who don't like chocolate, but how many of those people do you know and will be attending the wedding? Very few, I bet.
