I've convinced a creationist that evolution of species occurred and a Muslim that Islam is based on faith, rather than reason and science.

I've been convinced that the Trinity is possible (if God did exist) and that victimless crimes are impossible.

I doubt this ever happens because all religion involves so much faith - faith isn't something you can switch off once someone has it. People can change, but they really have to come to that conclusion themselves.

If that's a debate between 2 "non secular" persons, i do no longer see how the two of them might desire to ever legitimately "win." One set of basically imaginary techniques is as excellent as one extra. That pronounced, i'm beneficial it HAS occurred, because of the fact considered certainly one of them actual occurred to be greater at arguing. in fact, for the reason I merely recognised, non secular subjects are the ideal concern concerns for debate, precisely provided that they are with none rational foundation in any respect. you have gotten have been given no longer something although your debating abilities to fall returned on. Or, you already comprehend, merely kill the different guy - it is how persons have traditionally gained non secular arguments. "sure, I heard a pair of scientist that began believing God after one verbal replace with a Cristian." LOL. Yeah, we now have all heard that one.

If it's a debate between two "religious" people, I don't see how either of them could ever legitimately "win." One set of purely imaginary ideas is as good as another.

That said, I'm sure it HAS happened, because one of them simply happened to be better at arguing. In fact, for the reason I just mentioned, religious subjects are the perfect topics for debate, precisely because they're without any rational basis at all. You've got nothing but your debating skills to fall back on. Or, you know, just kill the other guy - that's how people have historically won religious arguments.

"Yes, I heard about a scientist that started believing God after one conversation with a Cristian." LOL. Yeah, we've all heard that one.

The nature of religious debate is not getting anywhere. And the idea of defeat doesn't fit the end result of a religious debate. I have had intense discussions of bible verses with a person of a different faith. I came to understand how they believed and it gave me insight.

Every single time. They admit that they can't overcome my arguments, but they DO make the remark that they don't have to, because I'm still wrong.

But I know I make them think afterwards, whether they wanted to or not.

That's the great thing about being atheist. You don't have to be good at debating. You've got the facts to prove your side. The only way any religious person ever "wins" a debate on the subject, is by spinning or avoiding the topics where the facts are presented in plain view.

Yes I have. My cousin, and former roommate, is a pretty religious guy (compared to me at least) and we would get into healthy debates about all sorts of topics.

We've both admitted defeat when it comes to religion at various points.

Yes, but not on any major points.

EDIT: For example, I didn't think that the serpent in the Garden of Eden was the devil until somebody pointed out a verse in Revelation that said just that.

Yes, myself. At one time I thought that the sins that people do were by their choice only. I was corrected. I learned from someone else through scripture, that we enter this world with a sinful nature. It is our nature to sin and our herritage. This is the reason that we need Jesus' perfect sacrifice for us to take our place for the punishment that we deserve for these sins.

The real and only choice that we have is whether to choose Jesus as our Lord and our Savior, or not. We can't be good enough or religious enough to deserve forgiveness. Only forgiveness can come through what He did for us on the cross.
