That Muslim women are mistreated and beaten because of verse 4:34 in the koran? I mean, just because it says the men can beat them, doesn't mean they do right? It's just like symbolism? Maybe like how at communion, Christians pretend to drink Christ's blood and eat his flesh, but it's just a cracker and grape juice...right? I mean, just because they actually do get beat, or shall I say, there are "alleged" reports of them being beat and mistreated...and they are forced into lives of subjugation in most Muslim lands, that doesn't mean anything right? I mean, as long as they toe the line and obey the master, er uh, I meant *man*, everything is copastetic, correct? So it's not all bad, right? The beating clause of 4:34 is basically a last resort, like when you are training a puppy to be housebroken, and you first use redirection, then time in the kennel, then a swat with a rolled-up newspaper...same deal, right? Just with human females?

The last resort in my case is by no means to beat my wife. A much more peaceful and loving way would be to just leave her if it comes to that.

I am also not my wife's master but her companion, confident, friend and partner. We're valued the same within our relationship.

The verse in the Qur'an uses the word DARABA for beat but the word can also mean many things other than beating.

The question here is this: Supposing that the word really means to beat. What then is the proof that Muslim men are the worst wife beaters than the rest of the men of other religion?

The answer is obviously none.

If we compare USA the largest Christian country on earth and Indonesia the largest Muslim country on earth, the statistic is so staggering. In USA 5 women are reportedly beaten every hour in New York alone while in Indonesia 5 women are reportedly beaten every 2 months!

I am not justifying wife beating because it is not only cruel but also inhuman. My point is Christians are very fond of pointing fingers at Muslim men as wife beaters because the Qur'an "permits" them to do so without realizing that they are the ones who are in denial. In the world today, the highest number of prostitutes, single parent, and domestic abuses and women abuses happen in Christian countries from Brazil to Congo to USA to Ethiopia.

So who’s talking again?

To be fair and for the sake of offering both sides of the coin, I'll give you a link where a scholar of Islam explains the true meaning of that word in Arabic, which many translate as ''beat'' when it allegedly means ''tap.''

However, I am not going to allow a man to beat me not even symbolically!!! As long as there's space for mistranslation - it means that Qur'an is not perfect and that it's not from God. That would be my humble opinion.

Now as for domestic violence in Islam - let's face it. Domestic violence happens everywhere and it doesn't choose religion or race. But yes - there certainly ARE Muslim men out there who use (or shall I say ''abuse'') this verse to beat their wives.

Well, technically, the Bible also says that a woman can be beaten, as long as her husband uses a stick thinner than the circumference of his thumb...

I doubt that many women under Sharia law are abused. But yes, the laws themselves are misogynistic and when enforced lead to human rights tragedies. (But then again, so would Biblical law...)

I think part of the difference is that western cultures such as the US and Europe favor individuality, where other cultures value conformity. Since I'm born and raised in the US, I obviously prefer western culture. But it would be xenophobic of me to say that western culture is innately superior, when I have no direct experience with another culture.

Edit: Ok, I looked up the thumb thing and that's not true. But there are plenty of other gems in the Bible on how to treat women, so I stand by my statement that the Bible is also misogynistic. The laws that come from it are no better than Sharia law.

This is not just a Muslim situation. Most patriarchal religions encourage the abuse and subjugation of women.
