EDIT: Sportchick50, if what you want is companies that kids will recognise, how about Cadburys and Tate and Lyle!
Marky, thanks for your guidance. You correctly point out that HSBC is a British company. It used to be called Midland Bank. They acquired the whole of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking corporation and the shares are listed on the LSE as a FTSE 100 company - as is Rolls Royce. GEC on the other hand no longer exists; it was absorbed into Marconi in 1999 which in turn was acquired by Ericsson - a Swedish company.

Karl Marx was an Atheist and he wasn't British. Adolf Hitler was one too, and he too wasn't British. Same with Stalin and Lenin. I guess the better question would be "Why are a majority of famous atheists of British descent?" Now to answer that version of the question? After Darwin (who actually wasn't an Atheist he was Agnostic) it became all the rage to declare one to deny that there was a higher being. Basically it became fashion. Over time that fashion hung around, giving rise to some of the more famous Atheists of the day, and as with some fads it never quite went away. In short? It's just more easily accepted there than in many other nations.

EDIT Livelife, Unfortunately, TVR are now owned by Russians, MG and Rover are owned by the Chinese and although Aston has been bought back by a British consortium, it is funded by Koreans.
EDIT: Lord CHarles, Rolls Royce (car part anyway) is owned by Volkswagen and the HS in HSBC stands for Hong Kong and Shanghai, although there head office is based in London
