I'm not a parent (i'm just 21) yet i like to read about parenting. From what i have read so far, television only contributes to the child's trivial knowledge. If i am not to have a television at home (and have a stay at home mother) what will my children be missing?

philitree - we have the NG magazines and i'm not asking about survival, i'm asking about what would be missing.
It seems that i'm not going to buy a tv in the future.

Nothing at all. It's just a tool for learning but not the only thing to use. We got rid of our tv when our son was born. He's almost three and he knows how to spell his name, potty trained, he knows the complete alphabet and numbers up to 20. He's learning how to speak two languages and he knows how to use the computer and cell phone. We give him lots of attention and read to him constantly. He's very involved with other children at the library and park. We also take him to restaurants once or twice a week to get him exposed to a exciting evironment and also to try different foods from other cultures. He loves sushi, mexican, egyptian and hawaiian dishes. So I think if you got rid of your tv, you will sacrifice entertainment via media, but you will be closer to your child and he/she will love that attention. Also, they will become more intelligent.

As I was growing up, we only had basic channels so I would only watch a movie on "the Wonderful World of Disney" every sunday night, but that was the extent of my tv watching. Now that I am a teenager, we have satellite and I watch TV constantly. When I move out, I am going back to basic channels. If you choose not to have a television, ou child would not be missing anything. In fact, they would be gaining a lot. They will learn how to entertain themselves, how to do crafts, a healthy lifestyle, focus more on homework, and much more. Or, you can have a tv that they constantly watch and have their brains and creativity all sucked into that thing. I have a few days where I will watch TV, then unplug it for a week or so to do other things.

Nothing. I frequently get rid of the TV and guess what the child does things such as reading, art, outside play. He complains for a day or 2 but that's it. At our house we only have VCR/DVD no antenna, no cable nothing. So TV is usually on for background noise(probably not best choice I know) but hardly actually watched. My son is above grade in reading and math plus his comprehension and is frequently told that his answers to open ended questions are insightful. Plus there is no Wow I saw that on TV hey mom can we get that?

Only the great National Geographic specials.
Lots of folks survive without television. No biggie.

nothing, television is merely a babysitter. it doesn't teach as fully as you can. you can teach a child how to interact on a human basis, how to touch. you can sit down with them with a book and hold them as they look at the pictures and learn gradually how to read. television isn't that great. kudos to you for thinking about this now.

tv is ok, but to use it as a form of "taking care" of kids is not ok... my daughter watches tv, not alot, but she learns things from it. there are lots of educational childrens programs that help teach morals, numbers, colors, etc... tv is fine, in portions... kids need to be outside playing or reading, or coloring, or listening to music etc....
I find something i have tried to teach or tell my child and she wouldnt listen to me, but if dora the explorer tells her the same thing she learns and listens. its the way it goes sometimes

Nothing. Our TV is in the basement, and we don't have cable, so it rarely gets used. We watch movies occasionally, but mostly we read and play.
