You could make them blankets (I don't know if the 6 year old would like this, but the 3 yr old might). An easy way to do this is get 2 pieces of matching fleece from a fabric shop. Lay them on top of each other. Make cuts around the edge perpendicular to the edge (so that you are cutting straight in from the edge). Space the cuts about an inch apart and several inches deep, through both pieces of fleece. When you are done, take one of the newly cut 'ribbons' from each piece of fleece and tie them together. Repeat all the way around the edge.
You should end up with a double layered blanket with knots around the whole edge.
You might want to experiment on a scrap piece of fabric first to get a feel for the spacing/depth of the cuts.
For a variation, leave one edge open. This makes a bag that could be used as a stuffed animal bed or sleeping bag.

I make a lot of gifts myself. I go to the craft store, and you can pick up little wooden "treasure" boxes, or mailboxes for them to keep special things in. Even if you aren't very artistic, you can buy a couple different colors of acrylic paint, and some sponge applicators, and paint the lid, interior, and sides different colors, usually all for less than 10 dollars, at least where we live. Or u can buy the leather make your own kits, like wallets, with everything included and piece it all together. The instructions are included and are usually pretty simple.
You can also make playdough, put it in a fun container, and include a couple inexpensive plastic cookie cutters for them to use.
Here is a recipe for playdough:
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
food coloring of your choice
combine all dry ingredients in a medium sized sauce pan. Add 8-10 drops of food coloring to your water, then add water and oil and mix well. Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture starts to thicken up and turn into dough. When it is really thick and doughy, turn out onto a countertop or table and knead it carefully, since it will be pretty hot. You can wear rubber gloves if you need to. when cool, store in an airtight cool place, like the refrigerator. Mine keeps for 4-6 months depending on how much the kids use it. It won't hurt them if they eat it, but it sure tastes bad, so i encourage mine to use it for PLAY only. :)
Hope this gives you some ideas.
