Hello!
When I first brought my puppy home (12 years ago), she was the same way. We gave her a stuffed animal to cuddle with at night, and a hot water bottle filled with warm water to sleep with. This seemed to help - it made her feel more secure. Try to comfort her, but not too much..she may associate her crying with the reward of your attention/company, and will continue to whine and whimper until you respond. Just be a firm, but loving puppy-parent. =) Here is some more info to help you out, too: http://www.doglistener.co.uk/puppies/puppy_crying.shtml

As for the price and paperwork, my only question is where did the puppy come from? A reputable breeder would have supplied paperwork along with the puppy, so I would question the breeding behind the puppy.

As for the crying, that is normal. The dog is away from their litter and mom for the first time, and will initially be unhappy. He will settle in, it usually takes the first week or so. In the meantime, a couple of things you can do - - -

In their crate (or wherever you keep him at night), put a large stuffed toy - something warm and fuzzy. Also, if you have an old shirt or pj's that you don't wear that much, wear it for a day and then, without washing it, give it to the puppy. It will contain your scent, so the puppy will have a fuzzy toy and smelly shirt to snuggle with! Sounds a little strange, but it usually works.

Yup $480 w/ no papers is a bad thing. Means you got ripped off.
Don't treat him like a baby and try to figure out why he is crying. He'll keep crying if you do that. You make sure he is warm, that he is fed well, he has a good place to sleep and you make sure you take him outside every hour, some nice toys to play with, and spend time with him. You meet those needs and he won't be crying.

Just let it whine. in a few days it will calm down it is just scared. DO NOT baby it when it cries or else it will use that as a "If I cry I will get what i want" attitude.

480 for a unregistered dog. Were the parents registered? If not then yes very bad and bought from back yard breeders. DID they have OFA paper work to show you for proper health exams on the parents?

Sounds fairly expensive for no papers. You could have gotten a puppy for a lot less at an animal shelter/animal rescue site. About seventeen years ago I got a Shih Tzu for $75 from one in California - the sweetest little fur-ball imaginable. And more recently, a Lhasa-mix from the Humane Society in Michigan was only $125 (included the cost of neutering and shots).

Time will help it get used to being with you and less lonely for its birth family. What you do now will affect what your pup will expect in the future. So you don't want to baby it.

You need to determine where you want it to sleep - your room or another room, its own bed or ?with you? Then provide it with bedding that it will learn to recognize as its own and consistently place it on/in its bed when its bedtime. A dog crate works wonderfully for this as well as 'potty' training.

Every dog I've ever had cried for the first couple nights after I brought them home, even when they were in an animal shelter and didn't have families anymore. They're just in a new place and a bit scared I guess. It will pass soon enough. You know there are purebreds in shelters. Your money would have been put to better use if you would have bought a pooch from a local shelter. And it would have been cheaper too.

I'm wondering who would have sold you an 8-week old toy poodle? Tiny breeds should stay with their mother and litter mates until they are at least 11-12 weeks old. Reputable breeders know that. But now that you have it, try putting warm water in a bottle and wrap it in a towel - maybe if the puppy snuggles up to the warmth, it will feel more comfortable.

Your pup is just missing his mum and litter mates, he should settle down after a couple of nights. Try this tonight, get a ticking alarm clock and put it into the room with your pup, make sure he is warm enough with plenty of blankets and fresh drinking water that he can't tip over. make sure you take you pup to the toilet before bed time so he is comfortable when he first goes to bed, invest in some puppy training pads too for those little accidents!!

I would advise to take your pup to the vets as soon as possible too to get a health check, wormed and his first round of vaccinations!!!

Yes - it is a bad thing to pay $480 for a dog when there are millions of homeless pets in shelters and rescues.

It depends on the dog with regards to when it will adjust to the new environment.

IF it is indeed true, i think its heart breaking & something that Madeleine's Mum will regret deeply for the rest for her life. No wonder she looks so tortured. IF it is not true (as the woman next door did not hear any crying as pointed out by Helen O) but just taken out of context like so many of the lies regarding the McCanns, i find it disgusting & vile in the extreme. What i can't understand is why this info had to be leaked at this time.
