You can use it to make a payment like a check but they cannot be used in stores.

Like the first answer, they have pre-paid credit cards now. I do not own a credit card either....by choice. I do not want the bill or to take the chance of someone getting the number and sticking me with a huge balance to ruin my credit. I do have a pre-paid Visa and Mastercard. They are like $10 to purchase, then you call the number and have it activated. They will then send you a new card with your name on it. Then you just take money to where you bought the card and give them the card and the money and they will put that amount on your card. You can then use it just as a credit card.

Many stores now sell 'pre-paid' credit cards at the check-out register. You load them with money -- and use them like a credit card. This may be the best bet for you.
