I plan on purchasing a Home Theater System in a Box for our 42' Panasonic TV. My requirements are:
1) Reasonably Priced ($300 limit)
2)AM/FM Tuner
3)I-Pod Hookup
4)HD Compatiable
Are there some systems that work beeter with certain TVs? What is the best one for the best price?
Are there specific questions I should ask when purchasing this system?

iPod control will not be found for $300 bucks. Nor will you find one to switch HDMI at that price point either.
I would stay away from integrated DVD systems. Remember too that these HTIB are usually last years models packaged to sell, not for performance. I would say to maybe get one with the idea of replacing it in a year or so as you want to expand the system. Purchasing speakers and a receiver separate gives you the advantage of selecting speakers and receiver that sound go together, not just one put in a box to sell at a specific price point.

As far a comparisons between models in that price range there is little difference in quality or performance. Just take stock of what you are going to want to hook up to it and see that most are lacking in inputs and outputs.

Good Luck

I am a big fan of lower-priced systems that give great home theater experience, but I agree with "The Flap" - you are not going to get anything good for $300.

A good Yamaha receiver with iPod and HDMI switching is about $480 for the receiver alone.

Home Theater magazine reviewed some HTIB's in a box that were 'recommended' in Feb. They should be at great prices now so use your favorite search engine to look these up:

Dennon: DHT-487XP
Onkyo HT-S590, HT-S849
Pioneer HTP-3800
Yamaha YHT-570, YHT-670
