I've had two dentists tell me that my gums have receded somewhat, but both did not make it sound that urgent or anything. They told me overall everything looked good and didn't tell me I was in trouble or that I needed to do anything other than continue to floss and brush. I'm worried that I will encounter problem. Any advice/comments?

Every dentist that you go to should be counting the depth of the pockets in your teeth. 1-3 is good and 4 needs some working on and above that is not good. Flossing is the best way to reduce the receeding. I would ask the next time you go what the pocket depth is on your teeth. They can tell you. They use a small tool and poke it down into the spaces between your teeth. You will hear them counting. If you hear any number 4 and above ask which teeth they are so you can work on those. Ask lots of questions. That is the only way you will know.

Go and see a periodontist, he can give you the proper assessment as well as any treatment if necessary. Periodontist specializes in the health of your gums, its not a bad idea to go for a check up once in a while. If you wait till the teeth fall out like the first answer suggested you waited far too long. If the gum recession is past a certain point a periodontist can transplant a small amount of tissue from the roof of your mouth to the gum are, - no big deal - really.

I wouldn't be concerned unless there is pain to hot/ cold. Don't brush too hard. Use a soft bristle toothbrush.
