As an artist and studio owner, I am perfectly fine with 18.

No. The law is set at 18 for tattoos in most states and piercings have other limits too for a reason. Kids make mistakes and this prevents them from making more permanent mistakes. I'm not calling either mistakes, I have some of both just agree with the laws. I got my first piercing at 13 with my moms consent and had to wait until 18 to get my tattoos. Taste changes, choices are made in haste and kids don't think about the future as much. It's one thing to get a piercing as a minor but tattoos should in no way be lowered. Would you want to see girls with little pink hearts and some boys initials on their hip all the time? No, tattoos should be taken seriously as to prevent that and the law does. It's not unfair to set requirements about something that is typically permanent, it's smart to wait it out.

Even though I am a professional piercer I think that the age limit for piercings should be 18 for anything other than ears. And the age limit for tattooing should be 21. A tattoo is a decision that will last with you through life, yet you have to be 21 to drink alcohol and only 18 for a tattoo.... yeah, tattoos should be 21+.

I feel this way because I have seen way too many people end up regretting tattoos and piercings that they got prior to 18. Teenagers suffer from the 4 I's... Immortality, Infalability, Infertility, and Independence (that they don't legally have considering their body belongs to their parents until they are 18.)

I think the age should be raised to 21 for tattoos. Because piercings aren't permanent, age 18 is acceptable. I got my first tattoo 6 months after my 18th birthday- it's one of those things where you get one and then you want more- I turn 21 in four months and have several. Now, I am getting all removed but one [yes, I beat myself up over it everyday. I feel like the dumbest person ever..] I have already started the removal process with my first laser removal session. I believe that an 18-year-old does not have the mental capacity to fathom having something on their skin for the rest of their lives. The mind is not developed enough to grasp the concept by that age.

Honestly if you're going to get it done your going to get it done. Its pretty easy to borrow someone elses id and loads of parents aren't against tattoos anymore. But I think it should be kept at the age it is now, it might make some people put a bit more thought into getting a tattoo then some drunk 16 yr old thinking getting that monkey from the beer add on his back is a good idea

i think of it may well be raised to 21. I even have 27 tattoos and a few piercings, which i don't experience sorry approximately interior the slightest. yet i did not get my first one until eventually i replaced into 22 (i'm 26 now). i don't think of human beings under 21 are mature sufficient to make that determination. i wanted multiple gruesome and terrible tattoo whilst i replaced into 18 and that i'm chuffed that I waited.

Absolutely not. They're in place for the same reasons that a person can't drive until they're16, and drink until they're 21. It's a maturity thing. Not to mention, most people don't stop growing and developing until 18 (and sometimes later), and certain tattoos can get distorted and pierciegs may have to come out and be redone. The laws are in place for a reason.

ummm NO! If anything they should raise it. Alot of people have a tattoo picked out in haste, there first one from when they were young. Not that they necessarily regret it, but they just wanted a tattoo soo bad, that they didn't put much thought into it.

Personally I decided I wanted a tattoo at 17, and tired to get one right b4 I turned 18, something about the illegalness of it was exciting. Fortunately I didn't find a scratcher to scar me and ended up waiting until I was 19, and my first tattoo is still one of my favorites.

I think drinking, being able to get drafted, married & inked are all fine at the same age. 18 works for me, but as long as they're the same I'm happy. Iirc the UK has at least some of those at 16 and others (tattooing?) at 18. Of course, the US has drinking at 21.

I don't mind (too much) driving at 16 since people need to practice.

Off-topic a bit, but I do think they should generally go hand in hand.

As an artist, I'm fine with the age being 18. There's no reason to do it before. The body is still growing, even at that age, but not to the point that it would cause stretching in the tattoo. Even at 18 people STILL make hasty, uninformed decisions about what to put on their bodies. 18 is a decent age. You can vote, fight for your country and smoke....

Even if they lowered the age limit, it'd still be 18 in my shop.

No, especially not for tattoos. Tattoos are permanent and I honestly don't think anyone younger than 16 or whatever can decide what they want on their body for the rest of their lives. If I would have gotten a tattoo when I was 16 it would have been something stupid like a playboy bunny...SO GLAD I waited.
