Canned foods without gravy is what is best for all cats or a raw made diet. Sardines, chicken ,tuna, on occasion won't hurt. Keep fish meals down to 25% or less of what you feed due to the phosperous content.
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?
http://www.catinfo.org/#Learn_How_To_Read_a_Pet_Food_Ingredient_Label
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php
Please read about cat nutrition.

My older cat loves Walmart's Special Kitty in the various flavors. He's eating Purina One right now but it's more expensive than the other. He also likes Meow Mix. We haven't tried the others. He refuses to eat grocery, pet store, and vet brands and would rather starve if you feed them to him.
He loves when you open a can of kitty food but he'll only lick off the gravy, take a couple bites, and leave the rest. He also likes when you open cans of tuna or salmon or whatever but he won't eat them. Just likes the smell. Sardines should not be an issue for your cat if she likes them.

cheap canned food that doesn't contain wheat, corn, rice or soy is MUCH MUCH better than expensive dry vet foods that have those ingredients. Look for something without those ingredients and you'll do fine. And do not feed a diet comprised mainly of fish, as it contains a lot of phosphorous which can be hard on an older cat's kidneys.
And KD is NOT good food. Take a look at the ingredients and really think about whether you think its all that great.

Sounds like you really. My "oldMan" cat loves the 3oz. cans of Fancy Feast in chunky chicken...But get a good dry food to leave down 24 hrs a day. Our older cats start eating less but more often. My vet calls this "grazing"..By the way, it isn't at all necessary to feed more than one can per day...Divide it into two so it stays fresh May I share a funny??? Alittle stray yellow and starving kitten came to our door afew weeks ago. A mutual love affair started. Now wehave a new boy w call

vet food isnt always good - eg Science Diet is over priced CRAP!!! (you are paying for vet endorsement and vets do not actually often receive ANY education on ingredients or brands.. so ya NEVER buy from a vet)
- however WAL MART etc food ISNT as cheap as you might think..
Cats are TRUE carnivours they NEED meat!!! these foods do not use very much meat so the cat has to eat A LOT of food to get any nutrition.. as such you are feeding A LOT more of the cheaper foods (more poops too ) than if feeding a decent qualtiy food...
you didnt mention what country you live in.. I am in Canada and I find SUMMIT to be good value for its cost, Acana and Nutram are even better...
look for foods with CHICKEN meal or Lamb Meal - or TURKEY meal as # 1 ingredient..
you will notice the cheap foods use CORN or SOY as #1.... are either of these meat???
Chicken By_products = Beaks feet feathers - not exactly meat either - so why would you PAY for food that included something that isnt even digestable???
seriously go to a better store and compare ingredients YES you will pay MORE per BAG - however you will save $ in the long run because your cat wont need to eat as much ( most good foods have reward programs - buy 10 bags, get the next one free)....

Walmart cat food sucks. Science diet sucks.
You need to look on ingredients list , you the first ingredients to be some sort of protein, you want for corn and rice and potatoes to be much further away on your list of ingredients.
If i were you i would order my cat food on the internet in large quantaties. Try to get Innova Evo or another cat food with a high protein ratio.
If you cant afford these or dont want to for whatever reason then i would get wet food for your cat.

Hi, Here in England you can buy Senior Cat Food, so have a look in Walmart you don't notice the senior cat food unless you look for it, don't give your cat kitten food as there is too much protein in kitten food and it affects their liver/kidneys, also sardines are great for your cat, mine love the sardines in tomato sauce.

My cat is 13 and eats Iams Indoor weight and hairball control. I tried to phase in something new and it made him ill, so we went back to Iams. I do give him treats every now and then and I also will give him sardines or a bit of tuna, but he doesn't really care for it.
As far as I have read, the occasional can of tuna or sardines will help them with hairballs and such, as long as it is packed in oil, but I have never asked the vet....especially since my baby boy doesn't much care for that stuff....

One of the best catfoods is Scienceplan, that's why vets recommend it,you can buy it over the counter from any vets. They do a wide range of special meals for different ailments etc.My vet recommend that I should feed my kitten with the one for neutered cats (6 months/6 years)after I had him neutered a few months ago.

Look for Food that says (your cats age and type) on the bag. Ask the clerk at the pet store as well. Ask an expert in Cats as well, for cheap food. Dollar store. Throwing ideas out there.
