No fence is needed and that would just be a whole lot of money spent on something that won't ultimately work.

National ID, checks on employment and huge fines for hiring illegals. Simple as that.

Here's the thing that nobody seems to think about. Say one day they say everybody who is here is now legal and everybody who wishes to now come just has to spend a bit and do it legally.

Later all of those who become legal would take issue w. illegals. They have jobs, health insurance, a house and such. Then they would go "why do I pay so much in taxes for illegals"? Their children who are integrated might go "why do I pay so much for tuition when illegals get in state"? The list is endless.

This is happened in country after country over time. So the heck with a fence...... just put controls in place as doing otherwise will just continue the cycle.

Closing the border is necessary but won't work until we have forced all the illegals out of the country. No use closing it while we are overrun. Give us two years and check back to see if you can sneak back in. I'll bet you won't be able to!

Yea, we should close the border, deport all minorities, and live in individual bubbles so that nothing happens to us. We should also deport gay people and kill every woman who thinks of getting an abortion. We should pretty much do what our Republican politicians tell us to do. People who think like this are idiots!!!

yes the border needs to be closed. i saw a report on the news that said in 2005 150 thousand illegals was caught coming through the us and mexican border. the bad thing about it, most of them was from the middle east claiming to be mexican. we want to secure our borders to keep terrorist out and then illegals who come here to sponge off the united states tax dollars.

Definately, I have relatives waiting for years for their their petition to immigrate here, the only barrier for them if they want to do it illegally is the huge Pacific Ocean. Plus, I don't appreciate people cutting in front of me if I'm standing in line at the theatres, McDonald's, wherever...just sign the guest book when going through our borders legally!

I love it when people ask questions like this, as if it were as simple as putting a "stop" sign or similar in someone's path! No matter how it is accomplished, it is a pointless task: even if it were feasible to somehow put a barrier between entire nations (Great Wall of China, anyone?), it is too expensive and would take forever, and people would find ways over, under, or around it!

BTW, who's the "they" to whom you were referring?

Yup. Seal it off, to all but those who LEGALLY immigrate. If we don't build the wall (metaphorically speaking) it's going to cost us much more in the long run. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound o' cure, etc.

If we can afford it, it would be a reasonable step toward solving the illegal immigration problem.

But the cost would be huge. In ways that are easy to see and, likely, in ways that are not obvious to me or to others who are not authorities on subjects like this.

It's probably not practical. Though we could probably at least "tighten" the border at reasonable cost.
