Okay, here is the straight poop on Space-A Travel. It is free - no fees. If you are overseas, dependents that are Command Sponsored can travel Space-A without their sponsor to the port they first land at.
In Conus, Dependents may travel with their sponsor.
I am retired Air Force and was recently stationed in Europe as a dependent with my wife, who is a DoD Civilian. I flew Space A out of Rhein Main (which is now closed) Ramstein in Germany, and Rota Naval Station in Spain.
I never had a problem getting on a Space A Flight, you just have to be will ing to travel at non-peak times of year. School vacation times are a terrible time to try and travel.
It is available, it is free, and you have to be patient!!
Hope this helps.

The Air Force Air Mobility Command (AMC) runs the Space-Available program. Predominently it is for overseas travel. Stateside is available, but VERY hard to find or get on. To and from overseas locations dependents can travel if the aircraft have room for them based on a priority system. The Military.com website should have some pretty good info, or check for a base website for the base you will be flying out of the U.S. From.... McGuire AFB, NAVSTA Norfolk, Travis AFB, Charleston, or Philadelphia are some of the most frequently used. If you are going toward Europe, www.airtermnorva.navy.mil is the best site. It also explains passenger priority for SPACE A travel.

Space A travel on MAAC aircraft but if you are talking about regular airlines there isn't any program like that. Space A is rough to get on as a priority system exists and seats to most locations are limit ted; basically, you take seats that are empty because active duty people on orders can't fill them all. it is not an Air Force benefit all services can use it and no priority by service-the priority is based on your status in the military, reason for travel, and so on.

its called a mac flight but it is for all services and it does not allow all family members to fly free. i had to pay for my wife to fly and it is only allowed if you have a military id or dependent id. It is also a space available flight so if they have people on orders you will not be allowed to fly until they are seated. Its actually not a very wise choice. I would go ahead and fork over the money cause you are never guaranteed a seat.

umm, not quite. Family members may NOT use Space A Within CONUS unless they are traveling with their sponsor. OCONUS they may only fly from the country they are stationed in to the last Stateside location that flight has(and vice versa).
and additionally, it is not always for free, there may be fees involved.
