I'd take your dog to the vet for a checkup. It could be the food that you are giving them. It could also be some sort of infection that needs to be treated. Some skin infections can smell pretty bad.

You need a high quality diet. Too much carbs can cause a foul odor.

I agree that it could be ear smell--clean the ears with peroxide and rubbing alcohol. Do it carefully about once a week.

When bathing, you can use a loose oatmeal mix after the shampoo.Rub it in well, leave on for a couple minutes and rinse well. I use 2 cups of PLAIN instant oats (cheapest store brand you can find)---mix with 4-6 cups of warm water, let sett for 15 minutes before using. It also helps the skin and coat.

Finally---chlorophyll tablets crushed in with food can help body odor. Get at local drug stores or health suppliment store.

Stinky dog syndrome is what I call it. My first guess is that you are feeding a low quality food. If you switch your dog to a high quality kibble with little to no grain and no fillers or things such as corn your dogs skin will improve dramatically! What is happening is that your dog is over producing to much oil, no matter how many baths you give it will continue to happen. Changing the food with get your dog in balance and will improve the skin, coat and smell ten fold. I recommend Canidae, Wellness, Innova to list a few.

I never had a stinking dog but I've only had one that wasn't a sight hound - and my mutt boy doesn't smell either.
Isn't there some kind of food you can feed that helps prevent this?
I'd search for a yahoogroup that is breed specific.

It could be the food you are feeding it. We have a dog that ate Old Roy dog food from walmart and it always stunk. Then we changed his diet and he doesnt mell bad any more.
It is worth a try. It takes a few weeks for it to change the smell.
Good luck!

It could be his food. Some food makes dogs have bad gas or just give off a bad odor from their skin. It could be the weather you're having. We live in an area with lots of moss and somewhat humid weather, in the spring and summer our dog smells bad just from the air.
It could also be an ear infection. they smell HORRIBLE. Check your dogs ears to see if they feel warm, look red, have any goop in them, are tender, etc. If the ear is the source of the smell, head to the vet ASAP.

In the meantime, Febreeze him! =)

You don't say what kind or size dog. What are you bathing with? If it is primarily around the ears, it could be an ear infection. Talk with your groomer or vet about possibilities.

I use a pet cologne that is made of all natural ingredients. Its made with lemon grass. It has a very pleasant smell. The one for the females is called FurHer I believe the male one was called FurHim. They also may sell something at the petstore that may help.
